Obituaries
Sam McMillan
MILWAUKIE - Sam
McMillan, author, educator
and wheat rancher, died Au
gust 1 at a Milwaukie hospital.
He wrote two books, "The
Bunchgrassers," a history of
Lexington. Oregon, where he
was bom January 16, 1916. He
also wrote "Gathering of the
Clan." a history of the McMil
lans dating back to family
origin in Scotland several cen
turies ago.
McMillan's grandfather
homesteaded in the Lexington
area in 1886. and his father
homesteaded in that area a
short time later.
He graduated from Lexing
ton High School in 1933, and
worked on his father's wheat
ranch through the spring of
1941. He enlisted in the Army
Air Corps in April, 1941 and
was discharged in December,
1945 as a Sergeant Major. He
returned to Lexington after
World War II and purchased
his Grandfather McMillan's
estate. He operated that wheat
ranch from 1946 through 1958.
Mr. McMillan married
Amabel Strodtman in 1943.
He moved to Portland and
entered Portland State in 1958.
receiving his B.A. degree in
history in 1962. He taught at
Centennial High School for
five years, and received his
Masters' degree in 1968. He
was an instructor at Mt. Hood
Community College for 10
years, retiring in 1977.
Mr. McMillan was member
of the Al Kader Shrine; past
master, Heppner Lodge No. 69
AM & FM; past district
deputy grand master, district
No. 28; and past patron Locust
Chapter No. 119, O.E.S. He
was also a member of
B.P.O.E. No. 358, Heppner.
He is survived by his wife,
Amabel, by brothers Robert of
Hillsboro and Jack of Red
mond, three surviving sisters:
Freida Slocum of Heppner,
Eula Markle of Sandy and
Naomi Hill of Portland.
No public service was held.
Commitment was at Skyline
Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be
made to the Masonic & Eas
tern Star Home in Forest
Grove, Oregon, 97116, or to the
Portland Sunshine Division.

workday set
AH 4-H families and friends
of 4-H and F.F.A. are encour
aged to assist with a clean
up-set up- get ready for fair
day on Sunday, August 14.
"Come as early as you can,
there's lots of things that need
doing," said Birdine Tullis of
the county Extension Service.
There are pens to be set up,
and cleaned; inside the annex
everything must be put in
place and decorations added.
Each livestock club will be
assigned stalls early this year
and asked to clean them in
preparation for their animals.
To make the day a special
event, the fair board will
provide a main meat dish,
plates and tableware as well
as drinks for a potluck lunch.
Those who attend are asked to
bring a favorite salad or des
sert. At 4 p.m., all 4-H superin
tendents are asked to meet
with Bob Costa and Birdine
Tullis, extension staff, to fi
nalize plans and make sure all
things ane "go" for fair.

A story hour will be held at
the lone City Library on Au
gust 11, 18 and 25 at 4 p.m. All
children are welcome to at
tend. Refreshments will be
served following the story.

A free blood pressure clinic
will be held at the center on
Tuesday, Aug. 16 from 2:30 to
4:30 p.m.
Adult and Family Services
counselor Janet Phillips will
be at the center on Wednes
day. Aug. 17 from 9 a.m. to 12
noon to take applications for
food stamps and to handle any
problems that clients may
have.

center on Wednesday, Aug. 17
at 1 p.m. to conduct a Job
Training Techniques class.

Ron Pomeroy of Portland was best man. Sister of the bride,
Jeseca Kimball, Eugene, was maid of honor.
Following a reception at Nendell's Inn, the bride and
groom left for a trip to the Oregon Coast.
The couple is now at home in Corvallis where both are
students at Oregon State University.

Fair superintendents are
reminded of the pre-fair work
day on Sunday. Aug. 14 at l
p.m. at the fairgrounds in
Heppner. A potluck dinner will
be served later in the after
noon. The meat will be fur
nished. All volunteers are
needed, said Fair Secretary
Ruby Munkers.
A new feature at this year's
fair will be an Arts and Crafts
Day on Tuesday, Aug. 23.

strating an art or craft may

a call at Man Camp.

ambulance responded to a call
at the Boardman Safety Cen
ter to transport a man to Good
Shepherd Hospital in Hermis
ton. On August 4. a break-in was
reported at the North Morrow
Medical Clinic in Boardman,
A large quantity of drugs was
