If smiles bring happiness
then Princess Sylvia Ladd has
the market on happiness with
hers.
As a member of this year's
19B3 Morrow County Fair and
Rodeo Court, Princess Sylvia
has a long history of exper
ience at smiling as she has
been a pennant bearer the last
five years. Last year she was
the first pennant bearer for
Morrow County Junior Rodeo
Queen Kathy Hansen.
Princess Sylvia Is the
17-year-old daughter of Elmer
and Lorraine Ladd. She lives
on a 3,200 acre wheat, cattle
and horse ranch in lone. The
blonde-haired, blue-eyed prin
cess has an older brother,
Richard, a junior at Oregon
State University, and an older
sister, Christine, living in Cali
fornia. Sylvia started her riding
career when she was six-years
old when she got her first
pony, Candy. Together they
conquered herding cattle.
When she was old enough, she
Joined 4 11 with her Arabian
mare, Jazzed, which she ac
quired from her leader, Mer
lyn Robinson.
While learning and compet
ing in 4 11, Princess Sylvia has
won awards in showmanship,
English equitation, western
pleasure and trail. In 4 M she
also learned good cattle herd
ing techniques which have
helped her since she Is the
main wrangler at the lone
ranch.
Not only has Sylvia been
active in 4 H but this energetic
Miss has accomplished a lot In
school as well. As a freshman
in lone, she was head JV
cheerleader, played varsity
and JV volleyball, played in
pep and jazz bands, was a
member of the annual staff
and was elected freshman
homecoming princess. During
her sophomore year she was
head varsity cheerleader, a
member of Honor Society,
student council, secretary
treasurer of the student body,
won a scholarship from the
Odd Fellows and Rebeccas,
and participated in sports.
It was at this time, Sylvia
decided to continue her
studies at Blue Mountain Com
munity college in Pendleton.
Last fall she transferred to
Blue Mountain where she

THE NOBEL PRIZE
In 1936, Victor Heaa waa
awarded the Nobel Prize for

of hia life, which had be
gun on June 24th, 1883,
in Schloaa Waldatein, near
Deutachfeiatritz in central
Styria. Born the aon of a
forestry official, Heaa atud
ied phyaica at the Univerai
ty of Graz and in 1908
gained hia doctorate "aub
auapiciia Imperatoria" the
highest distinction in the1
doctorate examinationa in
imperiul Austria.
A BAFFLING ENIGMA
In 1910, the young Heaa
qualified aa a lecturer at the
University of Vienna and
became an assistant at the
Radium Research Institute.
It was during this period
(up to 1913) that he under
took hia legendary balloon
flights, again and again en
countering the aame baffling
phenomenon: the instru
ment (which Ilea had built
himself) showed the elec
trical conductivity of the air

PrinccHH Sylvia Ladd
completed her junior and
senior years of high school
while accumulating 43 college
credits. She lived with a fam
ily in Pendleton while she
attended college.
At BMCC she was active in
band and jazz and played in
concert. She was also named
editor of the college newspap
er. Princess Sylvia is returning
to BMCC this fall where she is
majoring in journalism. She
plans to continue her studies
at either Oregon State or
University of Oregon with a
degree In technical journalism
with a minor in oceanography.
When not attending school
and participating in court act
ivities, Sylvia enjoys riding
horses, bicycling, swimming,
tennis, photography, writing
poetry, drawing and stamp
collecting. This talented girl
plays Instruments ranging
from the woodwinds to organ
and guitar.
As Princess Sylvia heads
down Main Street during the
parade, and races across the
arena at the fairgrounds, she
will be on her official mount,
Poco, a l-hand, 14-year-old
bay gelding.

Victor Franz Hess died in
Mount Vernon, near New
York. "Hia" rays have since

ence with a wealth of new
ideaa, including the huge
high-energy physics labora
tories of CERN (European
Organization for Nuclear
Research) near Geneva. Cos
mic radiation remains an
area of research which fas
cinates scientist because, al
though rockets are now
being used to investigate it,
still no complete explana
tion of its origins in space
