Western Spruce Budworm
Infestation Control District
An Infestation Control DiBtrlct
is hereby designated and
declared by H. Mike Miller,
State Forester as authorized
by ORS 527.340 and the Board
of Forestry. The purpose of
the district is to have a uni
fied, economical, and effec
tive control in 1983 of an insect
called the western spruce
budworm. The larval stage of
the budworm feeds on the
needles of Douglas-fir, white
fir, grand fir and occasionally
other trees. The resulting
damage is tree growth loss,
top kill, and possibly some
tree kill.
After nine months of evalua
tion and review of the problem
the Declaration of the Control
District Is the final step before
control action.
The project will be conducted
in cooperation with the U.S.
Forest Service. Control will
take place during June and
July by aerial spraying of the
insecticide Sevin 4-oil from
helicopters. Timtxr lands that
meet the treatment criteria
will be treated.
The State of Oregon will cost
share 12' percent of the
treatment costs on private
lands. The U.S. Forest Service
will cost-share 50 percent of
the treatment costs for those
private landowners owning
less than 500 acres of timber
and 33 and one third percent of
those private landowners
owning more than 500 acres of
timber. Private landowners
will pay the remaining bal
ance of the treatment costs.
These landowners will be
biVed their share near the end
of 1983 or the first part of 1984.
