Hoppner and Lynch Terrace
Middle School eighth graders
held their annual educational
exchange last week. Twenty
nine Portland students spent
the week with Heppner stu
dents, while 19 Heppner kids
were bussed to the western
part of the state.
While in Heppner. the stu
dents had a tour of dryland
wheat operations, saw a crop
dusting demonstration,
learned some history of
Hardman, learned about
ranching operations, had a
tour of Kinma Corp.. Willow
Creek Dam and the County
Museum, and probably the
most fun for all. a rodeo
demonstration at the Ron Cur
rin ranch. They were also
treated to dinner during the
week by the Morrow County
Wheat League, had a wiener
roast at Shirley Ruggs' place,
and dined courtesy of the
Morrow Countv CowBelles.
The Heppner visitors were
to get a look at row crops,
learn about management of
the Columbia River Gorge,
see Reynolds Metal Co., visit
Boeing of Portland, the Clack
amas Town Center, the Port of
Portland, take a tour of Old
Town and get a "behind the
scenes tour" of the Washing
ton Park Zoo. as part of their
trip.
Dave Olcott, teacher at the
middle school, came to Hep
pner with the Lynch Terrace
students, while Heppner
Junior High math teacher
Vince Wilson accompanied the
local students.
Friday niRht dances were
held at both schools.
On Saturday, students
boarded busses to return to
their respective homes. While
enroute back to Portland, the
Lynch Terrace students had a
tour of north Morrow County
and the coal fired plant near
Boardman.
Heppner High
tracksters gain
experience at state
Heppner tracksters conclu
ded a vecy successful season
this spring by participating in
the Class A state meet at
Lewis and Gark College in
Portland last weekend.
The girls 400-meter relay
team of Janelle McElhany,
Jod: Padberg. Pam Orr and
Stephanie Payne earned the
only place finish for Heppner
with a fifth in the finals,
running :53.01. In the prelimi
naries the day before, the
Heppner team set a school
record with a clocking of
:5261.
"Efforts on Saturday were
much slower than on Friday.
The rainy weather greatly
affected individual efforts."
said Heppner Coach Dale
Conklin.
Stephanie Payne collected
seconds in preliminary heats
Friday to qualify for the Sa
turday finals but did not place
in the meet. Her time Friday
inthe 200 was 26.6.
None of the other Heppner
thinclads reached the finals.
Others competing were Jodi
Padberg, who ran 2 :29.3 in the
800: Orr. javelin: Sherry Cle
ment, shot put; John Moyer,
triple jump: and John Martin,
the 800.
With the exception of Cle
ment who is a senior, all of the
other performers are sopho
mores and juniors.
'The important thing is they
qualified for state and got the
experience of competing with
the best in the state," Conklin
said. "Hopefully, they now
know what they have to do to
be competitive at that level
and will have the success of
placing next year."

Hayes leads Mustangs to
victory over Stanfield
Ht-ppner used a six-run fifth
inning, highlighted by Jay
Hayes' grand slam home run,
to defeat Stanfield in a Colum
bia Basin Conference baseball
game at Heppner May 12.
and her home.
Solomon had been indicted
bv a grand jury for two counts
of alleged first degree rape
and three counts of first de
gree sexual abuse. The other
three charges were dropped in
exchange for his guilty plea to
the two charges.
Cecil Baldwin, 27. of

While Revoked on May 13 in
Morrow County Circuit Court.
Howard Welcome Waller,
50. of Levelland. Texas,
pleaded guilty to driving while
suspended May 13 in Morrow
County Court. The Oregon
Parole and Probation Division
have since issued a warrant
for his arrest from another
charge. McNerney said Wal
ler will be transported to
Salem.
Dean Graves of Heppner
was found not guilty of Care
less Driving in Morrow County
Circuit court on Wednesday,
May ll.
Although Hayes' blast gave
the Mustangs plenty of breath
ing room, they gave up four
Stanfield runs in the sixth
inning and needed a clutch,
two-out, two-run single by Ron
Doherly in the bottom of the
inning to register a victory.
The first four innings and
the last three were like two
different ball games, said
Heppner Coach Brent Eggers.
Heppner starter Jim
McConnell surrendered a run
in the first inning, courtesy of
three Heppner errors for the
game's only run through the
first four innings.
Stanfield added another run
in the fifth on three walks, one
error, and a hit, but then
Heppner decided to have some
offense of its own.
The Mustangs erupted for
six runs on two errors, a
double by Jeff Orr, and the
bases loaded blast to leftfield
by Hayes.
"Heppner thought the game
was over, but forgot to tell the
Tigers," the coach said.
Stanfield came right back
with four runs in the sixth on a
three run homer by Jim Hun
ter to tie the game 6 6.
With one out in the sixth.
Heppner's McConnell reached
base on a throwing error and
Orr singled to put two runners
on base. After a strikeout,
Doherty hit an 0-and 2 pitch to
leftfield to score both runners
and give the Mustangs an 84
lead
In the seventh, Stanfield
came up with an unearned run
but no more as reliever Hayes
put out the fire on the mound.
Hayes faced six batters over
one and two-thirds innings,
retiring five of them, four on
strikeouts. Fggers said he was
credited with the win.
McConnell allowed just four
hits through five and one-third
innings, but walked nine bat
ters. "The kids wanted a win and
went out and got it," Eggers
said. "We overcame a lot of
errors to win it and I la yes
came through with some
clutch hitting and pitching."
Hayes was 2-for-3 on the day
at the plate, as was Orr.
The Mustangs, 5 8 1 on the
season and 2 5 in the league,
wrap up the season Saturday
with a doubleheader at Pilot
Rock at 1 p.m.
