Heppner Merchants softball
team takes 4th in tourney
In their first tournament of
the season, the Heppner Mer
chants' softball team took a
fourth place trophy in the
Hermiston Brush-Up tourna
ment held last weekend.
The two-day men's slow
pitch softball contest was
played in Hermiston and
Echo. Rain and wind marred
the tournament for the 19
teams.
This is the first year for the
Heppner Merchants. Players
include: Jamie Query, Gary
Kemp. John McCabe, Mike
Rowell, Mike Smith, George
Waterland. Delbert Binschus,
Dave Eckman, Ron Bowman,'
Dan Mathews, Laverne Van
Marter. Dallas Harsin, Mark
Pointer. John Smith, Doug
Lowe and Mark Lovgren.

In the first game, the Mer
chants challenged U It I and
own 14-7. John Smith and
Jamie Query each slugged
home runs for Heppner.
The second game saw Ye
Old Pizza Shop blasting the
Merchants 15-2. The contest
was played in a driving rain
storm.
Rich's Payless Lumber was
the next opponent with the
Merchants posting a 9-3 vic
tory. Ron Bowman had a
triple in the first Inning to
spark the winners.
The last game on Saturday
saw Stanfield Drug being de
feated by the Heppner team
by the score of 7-3. Mark
Pointer and Laverne Van
Marter each had triples to
pace the winning team.
Sunday's game action star
ted with the Heppner Mer
chants beating the Stanfield
Merchants 8-6. The Heppner
squad jumped out ahead in the
second inning, getting runs
from George Waterland, La
verne Van Marter, Mark Lov
gren and Dan Mathews. Stan
field came back with one run
in the second. Heppner added
two more in the third and fifth
to hold onto the win, with Gary
Kemp collecting four RBI's.
The day ended for Heppner
in the next game as they were
defeated by Swain Motors 9-2.
The Merchants managed eight
hits with John McCabe sack
ing a double.
The Merchants resume
league play in Hermiston on
May 23 and 25, 7 p.m. at
Hermiston High School stadium.
All-Sports dinner planned
May 23 ut HHS
An All-Sports Dinner will be
held at Heppner High School
on Monday, May 23, at 6:30
p.m.. in the high school cafe
torium. The purpose of the
dinner is to honor all students
who have participated in the
sports program in any way
during the school year: play
ers, cheerleaders, dance team
members and statisticians.
These students are all asked to
attend with their parents, a
school spokesperson said.
Dinner will be potluck.
Those whose last names begin
with letters A through M are
asked to bring a main dish,
and those whose last names
begin with letters N through Z
are asked to bring a salad.

OHirt Wednesday, May 4. Biddle received recognition for
"faithful service to veterans" as a veterans' service officer
from 1976-8-.
Jr. Olympics meet to be
held this Saturday
Heppner Elementary School
will be sponsoring an Ameri
can Athletic Union (A.A.U.)
Junior Olympics Track and
Field Meet Saturday. May 21,
at the Heppner High School
Track. Registration for all
events will take place that
morning from 9 to 10 a.m.
Participants must register at
that time, said a spokesperson
for the event. The meet will
begin at 10 a.m. with field
events taking place first.
Running events will follow.
Age divisions sanctioned for
this meet are: 10 and under
(will be 10 or under during
1983); 11-12 age division (will
be 11 or 12 during 1983); and
13-14 age division (will be 13 or
14 during 1983).
Any participant of age 12
and under may compete in
three events, including relays.
Participants in the 13-14 age
division may compete in four
events, including relays.
There will also be an oppor
tunity for children ages seven
and under to compete, the
spokesperson said. The events
for these youngsters are
standing long jump, 50-meter
dash and the, softball throw.
This track meet may be
used to qualify athletes for the '
State Junior Olympics that
will be held in Portland June
11 and 12, she said. Only
athletes who meet or better
qualifying standards will be
allowed to advance to the state
meet, the spokesperson ex
plained. Only those age eight
and over are eligible to ad
vance to the state meet.
Parent help is needed to
hold the event. Those interes
ted in volunteering are asked
to contact Phyllis Payne at
Heppner Elementary,
676-9128. or at home, 676-5173.
IHS track team
finishes fine season

With three boys scoring
three points, the lone High
School track team finished a
fine season placing 34th at the
Gass A track and field meet
on May 13 and 14. Portland
Christian took the boys team
title with 74 points followed
by Colton who had 40.
Denny Starr was fifth throw
ing the discus 136'4". Starr
was beaten by an inch for
fourth by Dave Huchins of
Bonanza. He did not, however,
make the finals of the javelin.
High jumping 5'10", Tim
Patton finished sixth in that
event.
Don Taylor was nipped at
the tape in the preliminary
heat of the 110-meter high
hurdles and did not make the
finals.
Other local boys who placed
were: Rich Widman, Echo, in
the discus; Tyler Trumbull,
Riverside (Boardman); in the
shot put; Tim Porter, Gris-

The Morrow County Public
Works Department has re
leased the following Work Re
port for the week ending May
13:
The road project on Little
Butter Creek in the Pine City
area is progressing. Shoulders
were built up and widened and
gravel was spread this past
week.
Many roads in the county
that have been bladed during
the past week include: Pettys
Canyon, Bill Bergstrom, War
ren, Art Dalzell and Ransom,
Blackhorse, Freeieout, V..
Dalzell, Baker east and west,
Ella, south of Ella, Carlson
and Piper Canyon. Blackhorse
Road received ditch and cul
vert cleaning as did Kunze
Road in Boardman. East and
West Ella and Blackhorse
roads were cleaned up from
flood damage.
Gravel was spread on
Blackhorse, Ella, Baker east
wold (Helix), in the long
jump: Mike Brehaut, Condon,
in the 800 meters; and Tim
Smith of Griswold in the 100
and 200 meters. Griswold 's
400-meter relay team of Por
ter. Marshall Batterton, Jay
Gibbs. and Smith also placed.

Week Scholarships are asked
to phone the office and let the
staff know. They have no other
way of knowing whether
checks were burned in the post
office during the May 4 fire,
