kick off season

The lone Junior High track
teams kicked off the season at
the Columbia Jr. High Invita
tional last Thursday. April 14.
The boys' team was fourth
with 59 points and the girls'
team was fifth with 47 points,
competing against Umatilla.
Heppner. Imbler, Pilot Rock
and Columbia of Irrigon.
Chris Rea led the boys by
winning the 300 intermediate
hurdles fri a school record
time of 0:48.5. He also was
second in the high jump and
fourth in the 100-meter high
hurdles.
Leading the girls was Deena
Hams, who won the shot put.
discus and was second in the
softball throw, throwing 417",
76 0". and 15O"0".
Two seconds came from
Mike Rietmann. who threw
the softball 2025" and ran the
400 meters in 1:04.6. He also
long jumped 14'13".
The 1.200-meter medley
relay team of Kevin Ball, Rea.
Ashley Conklin and Rietmann
was fourth in 3:24 0.
Conklin was third in the long
jump (146"). fourth in the 200
meters (0:30.0) and ran 0:14.7
in the 100 meters.
In the 800-and 1 .200-meter
races Ball ran 2:47.2 and
4:13.3 respectively, besides
high jumping 45". Ken Snider
ran the two distances in 2:38.5
and 4:13.3 respectively, both
fourths. He heaved the discus
79 0" and also put the shot.
Jill Conklin was third long
jmumping U'S1," and ran
3:14.2 for 800 meters, good for
fourth. She also high jumped.
Kris Anderson had a 1:14.4
400-meter time which was
foruth.

meter sprints. Another 100
meer runner. Kim McCabe,
also tossed the softball.
Sprinters Ben Turley and
Brian Ball ran 0:16.1 and
0:17.1 respectively in the 100.
Ball long jumped 1014" and
ran with Tom Wilson in the
200. Wilson ran 0:40.4 for the
200 and also ran the 400
meters.
The Cardinal thinclads will
travel to Condon on Friday,
April 22. for a six-way. 1 p.m.
meet.

Seven local students have
been named to the winter term
honor roll at Blue Mountain
Community College and
another nine were placed on
the dean's list.
A total of 327 students
earned a place either on the
honor roll or dean's list based
on their high grades, said
Janet Groat of BMCC. Stu
dents receiving a 3.5 or better
are placed on the college
honor roll and those with a 3 0
to 3.5 earn a place on the

Upon the question of levying a
tax fr the purpose of funding
the school district budget
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN
THAT an election will be held
on May 17. 1983 tetween the
hours of BOO am. and 8:00
p m The purpose of the elec
tion is to submit a tax levy to
the voters to fund the school
district operating budget for
the t'tHrt K4 school year.
If this measure is approved
$3,721.565 00 of the taxes lev
ied in the 1983-84 fiscal year
are eligible for partial state
funding. However. $570,140.00
of the taxes will be totally
funded by the local taxpayers
without anv partial state
pavment.
The purpose of the entire
amount to be voted upon is to
provirle funds for mainten
ance and operation of the
school district which cannot
he provided within the dis
trict's tax base of $700,923 00.
The total levy will result in an
estimated lax rate of $7.13 per
$1,000 oo of true cash value,
exclusive of the tax for bonded
indebtedness.
