Scott Forsythe. a fifth grade student at Heppner Elemen
tary School, Jumps Rope for Heart at a benefit for the
American Heart Association. The event was held last
Wednesday in conjunction with a health fair at the school.
Heppner coordinator Brenda Weygandt reported 80 stu
dents and 12 teachers participated in the event.
Almost $2,600 was pledged, and community support was
tremendous, she said
A separate contest was held every 15 minutes for the
jumpers and the junior high student council provided prizes
for the winners.

Run T-shirts arrive
'
Two Heppner junior high seventh graders who will
participate in the April 10 Rolling Hills Run. Shannon
McLaughlin (right) and Jaci Sumner model T-shirts that
have arrived for the run.
Participants who complete either the three or six-mile run
will be awarded both a T-shirt and a certificate.
The deadline for early registration, at a cost of $6 is
Thursday. Mar. 17. After that date a 17 fee will be charged
through the day of the run.
Applications may be picked up at the Heppner Elementary
School office and at many Heppner businesses.

$200 scholarship
Melissa Privett
Melissa Privett, a Heppner
High School junior, has won
the local United Nations Pil
grimage for Youth Contest.
She received a $200 scholar
ship for her efforts.
Privett wrote a 500 word
essay on the role of smaller
nations in the United Nations.
The local contest is spon
sored by the Willow I O O F.
Lodge No. 66 of Heppner.
She traveled to Pendleton
last Sunday to participate in a
speak-off with other winners
in the district.
Frank Lockwood. Jr. of
Hermiston won the district
contest, and will receive a
sightseeing trip across the
country in July. He and other
winners from throughout the
Northwest will travel by bus to
New York to spend three days
atd the United Nations and
will also spend several days in
the Washington. D C. area.
The Odd Fellows Lodge spon
sors the trip and entertains the

The purpose of this levy is to
provide funds to balance the
Morfrow County operating
budget, and the Morrow Coun
ty Hospital and Ginic budgets
for 1983-84 The Morrow Coun
ty tax base for 1983-84 is
$438,281. This levy, with anti
cipated receipts from all
sources, will not finance ex
penditures for General Fund,
Roads. General School Funds,
Cities portion of Road Funds
and operation of the Hospital
and North Morrow County
Clinic. Increases are due to
inflation, existing labor con
tracts tied to cost of living,
and certain changes in hospi
tal operations, plus 8 percent
for uncollected taxes. The
total levy will be $2,742,478. If
this measure is approved,
$2, 188.036 of the taxes levied in
1983-84 are eligible for partial
state funding. However,
$554,442 of the taxes levied will
be totally financed by local
taxpayers without any partial
state payment.
