Mustangs stomp Stanfield
By GLENN SMITH
On Saturday, Feb. 12, the
Heppner Mustang basketball
team played a triumphant
home game and stomped the
Stanfield Tigers 74 - 57.
In the beginning things
didn't look too good for Hep
pner as the Tigers roared out,
getting an early 8 to 0 lead.
This seemed only to spark the
Mustang offensive as they
rolled back strong to stun
Stanfield.
Head Coach Brent Eggers
commented on this first quar
ter stall of the Mustang of
fense stating "A few of the
boys just didn't have their
heads in the game."
Putting in Eric Thompson
and Mark Way really helped
the offensive execution and
Heppner out scored the Tigers
22 - 4 after that. "That was
pretty much the ballgame,"
Eggers commented.
Stanfield seemed to be suf
fering from a recent Mustang
illness which was playing out
of control. Although Heppner
has been doing their fair share
of this lately, they controlled
their playing when Stanfield
didn't.
"We just realized that after
six whole games we need that
type of concentration. Defen

sively It was one of our best
games, and Offense too,
played well," Eggers' said.
When asked why the change
in performance, Eggers
commented 'The key word
was intensity. We finally went
in there (after the first four
minutes) and went the whole
game with concentration. This
element has been lacking in
our execution for the last six
games."
Coming up, the Mustangs
will play Pilot Rock in Hep
pner Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
for their last game of the
season. The Rockets succeed
ed in beating Heppner by 19
points at Pilot Rock earlier in
the season but Eggers is hop
ing that with a home court
advantage and if they "play
with the same type of inten
sity. Heppner has a good
chance of winning. We lost to
Pilot Rock before because of
foul trouble (Mike Currin, Jeff
Orr and Tom Huston fouled
out) but our foul problems are
getting better."
In the league, Weston Mc
Ewen is now on top with Pilot
Rock holding second. Heppner
is now 5 - 6 in the league and 11
- 8 for the season.
"It should be an exciting
game. With our team we have
ter and led 34 - 29. Coach Howe
said that this was a better
game than the first game with
Weston McEwen.
