The lone Cardinals won a
much needed league game
with the Helix Grizzlies, de
feating them by 12. 54 42 last
Saturday. As a result of this
victory, the Cardinals are
again tied for first place in the
East division of the Big Sky
Conference.
In the first quarter the
Cardinals battled it out in a
very defensive basketball
game, as they out scored the
Grizzlies 10 9. Donnie Taylor
led the Cardinals with six
points that were collected in
this quarter. Molendyke and
Jensen added four apiece for
the Grizzlies.
In the second quarter, the
Cardinals increased their lead
to three as the birds out scored
the bears 11-9, and ended the
half at 21 -18. Craig Gutierrez
collected five of his 15 total
points for the Cardinals from
the line of Charity as the
Cardinals ripped 75 percent of
the attempts from the free
throw line.
In the third quarter, the
Cardinals came out afiring
behind Tim Patton's eight
third period points. The Car
dinals racked up a seven point
lead in this quarter as they
ended the period at 39 - 32. The
Cardinals controlled the
boards in the second half and
out rebounded the Grizzlies 28
- 21.
In the final period. lone
stretched their lead to 12 as
they received a pair of buckets
from Taylor, Gutierrez and
Patton and ended the game at
54 - 42. Jeff Lembeke led the
Grizzlies' scoring boards with

With a phenomenal second
half and 20 points from Mike
Rietmann, the lone Jr. High
boys increased their record to
6 - I as they defeated the
Umatilla Vikings, 46 to 33 on
Monday. Jan. 31.
Rietmann hit for six points
and Kevin Ball for four in the
first quarter for lone as they
took a 12 - 6 advantage.
Umatilla out scored the
Cardinals in the second period
nine to seven, but lone led at
half time, 19-15.
The third quarter was pretty
much the red birds' as Ione's
lead was built to 33 - 25.
lone got four points from
Rietmann and Keith Morter in

Jr. High girls, 31-15

In a game in which 35 foul
shots were attempted and only
four made, the Umatilla Vi
kings rolled to a 31 -15 victory
over the lone Junior High
girls, Monday, Jan. 31. Ione's
record is now 3-4.
Sandi Wright had four points
for the Cardinals in the first
period, but Umatilla led, 8 - 6.
The Vikings again out
scored lone in the second
stanza to build a 14 - 8
intermission advantage.
Umatilla took the third
quarter six to five so their
advantage at the end of three
quarters was 20 - 13. Patty
McElligott was the only Car
dinal that scored in the fourth
period and the Vikings won 31 -15.
Deena Hams and Sandi
Wright were Ione's leading
scorers, with seven and five
points respectively.
The Cards were a terrible
three of 26 from the charity
stripe making 11.5 percent of

Ione's junior high boys' bas
ketball team continued their
winning ways last Thursday.
Feb. 3. by defeating the Ar
lington Honkers 40 to 26. The
Cardinals are now 7-1.
Racehorse basketball was
the first quarter trademark as
lone opened a 15 to 2 lead,
behind four points each from
Mike Rietmann and Ashley
Conklin. Ken Snider added
three.
The Honkers owned the sec
ond period. 8 - 6 as Arlington's
Rick Mahler hit for six points,
lone led at halftime 21 to 10.
The Cardinals again ran in
the third quarter and were
ahead 35 - 12. getting four
points from Dustin Padberg
and Mike Rietmann.
Even though the Honkers'
Rick Mahler had 13 points in
the fourth quarter and made
an unbelievable 40-foot jump
shot at the buzzer. lone won 40
to 26.
At the foul line the Cards
were ragged, making only two
of seven shots for 28 6 percent.
Arlington sank 8 of 14. 57.1
percent.
The Honkers' Mahler led all
scorers with 23 points. Mike
Rietmann provided 10 points
for lone; Dustin Padberg and
Ashley Conklin each made six.
Next up for the Cardinals
will be the Echo Cougars on
Thursddy. Feb. 10 and the
Condon Blue Devils on Satur-

In the game with the Echo
Cougars, the birds from lone
were dominated by the Cou
gars' overwhelming field goal
percentage of 70 percent and
their excellent 72 percent from
the Charity Stripe.
In the first quarter of play,
which took place on Echo's
home floor, the Cougars
gained a three point lead as
they connected for nine buc
kets and one three-point play
to outscore the birds 19 - 16.
Tim Patton ripped eight of his
game high 21 points In the
beginning period, and Shane
Correa of Echo collected
seven of his eleven.
In period number two, the
Cougars increased their lead
to seven as they held the birds
to only 14 points and dumped
in 18 of their own. David Lilly
racked up all five of his points
in this quarter to end the half
at 37 - 30 in Echo's advantage.
Roger Morter ripped six of his
eight total points in this period
for lone and Gutierrez
collected four for the birds.
The second half was more of
the previous story for the
Cardinals, being out scored by
one in the third and by nine in
