Cards win 1st league game

The Cardiac Cards recover
ed from their pre-holiday
stroke and won their first
league game of the season.
Ttiey defeated the Umapine
Chiefs by 44 points, with the
final score being 81 - 37.
In the first quarter, lone's
Tim Patton pumped in eight
points to lead the first quarter
scoring for the Cardinals. lone
brought out the guns and out
scored the Cheifs 22 - 4. lone's
fast break-press combination
was the key to their success,
with a little help from man-toman
defense.
lone also did very well on
the boards as they ripped
down 46 rebounds to Uma
pine's 15 for the game.
In the second quarter, lone
substituted the entire second
string and increased their lead
by five, ending the half at 43 -20.
Mark Meyers led the
quarter scoring with eight
points. Kenny Sweger lead
Umapine with 10.
In the second half, lone
started off as they did in the
first, racking up 22 points to
Uma pine's lone basket, bring
ing the score to 65 to 22 at the
end of the third quarter. Roger
Morter found the hot hand as
he ripped 10 points through the
hoop and Donnie Taylor added
seven more. Kenny Sweger
was the player from Umapine
who scored their two points.
In the fourth quarter, lone
again put in the second string
and again, increased the lead,
but only by one as the game
ended with a 44 pont spread
with lone in front. All of lone's
second string subs added at
least two pints in this quarter.
Coach Del La Rue made
triese comments about the
game: "It was a good league
opener for us, one because
everyone played and everyone
scored. Hopefully it will get us
into the right frame of mind
for the tough, upcoming game
against Helix."

The Morrow County Public
Works Department has re
leased the following Work Re
port for the week ending
January 8:
Load limit signs were posted
on several county roads last
week. Please observe the
limits on these roads so
damage can be kept to a
minimum. With everyone's
cooperation future mainten
ance costs could be reduced by
several thousand dollars per
mile.
Roads bladed this past week
were: Morgan E., Johnson
Grade, Zinter, Strawberry E.,
Paul Tews, Stefani, E-W Ella,
Homestead, Baker N. to
Smith, Juniper and Halvorsen
to Eight Mile.
Shoulder work was done on :
lone-Gooseberry and Brenner
Canyon roads.
New culverts were installed
on Brenner Canyon and Upper
Rhea Creek.
A rock wall was built under
Bergevin Bridge.
Culverts were cleaned and
weeds burned from the
shoulders of several county
roads.
In the north end of the
county, cold mix patching was
done on Irrigon Eighth St.;
gravel was spread on No. 910
and Irrigon - Washington St. ;
high water signs were placed
on Homestead Road. Culverts
were cleaned and brush and
trees cleared from Pipeline,
Wilson, Kunze, and the Bomb
ing Range roads.

The lone Cardinals dropped
their first season game
against the Helix Grizzlies in a
contest last Friday night on
the Grizzlies' home court. The
Cardinals were defeated by a
score of 53 - 51 in a game that
lacked execution and exertion
on behalf of the birds of lone.
The Cardinals were out
scored all through the night as
they were in the first quarter
by a score of 9 - 12. The
Cardinals were led in scoring
by Tim Patton who collected
six of the total points earned
by the Cards.
The Grizzlies and the Cardi
nals were about equal on the
boards as lone ripped 37
boards and the Grizzlies grab
bed 35. Tim Patton was the
leading rebounder for the
Cardinals with 16.
In the second quarter, lone
was out scored again as their
full-court presss proved to be
ineffective against the Helix
Grizzlies. The Grizzlies upped
their lead by one as they
dumped in 14 points to lone's
13. The Cardinals went to the
locker room looking at a four
point deficit. In the second
half, the Cardinals were
plagued with the same prob
lems as before; the birds
allowed the bears to bring
their lead to seven. The Cardi
nals had one of their worst
games at the Charity Stripe as
they only took advantage of
five of their 13 attempts. In the
fourth and final quarter, Tim
Patton collected 15 of his 28
points and brought the Cards
to within two points before
time ran out. Paul Goodwin
led the Grizzlies with 17, fol
lowed by 13 collected by Tim
Smith.
Coach LaRue commented,
"We played lousy and lost
one we never should have. I
have nothing more to say."
lone will meet the Arlington
Honkers on Friday and the
Condon Blue Devils on Satur
day. Both games will begin
with a J.V. game at 6 p.m. The

lone JV team rolls over
Riverside Pirates 56-27

The lone Junior Varisty
basketball team rolled to a
victory last Tuesday night,
Jan. 5. defeating the Riverside
Pirates' freshman team 5fi -27.
This was the second win of
the season for the Junior
Cards and they brought their
record to two and one for the
yhear.
In the first quarter, lone
jumped out to a healthy 20 - 0
lead behind Darrin Padberg's
12 first-quarter points. The
"Cards credited their win to
their awesome defense and
press that caused the fresh
man Pirates to turn the ball
over time after time, letting
lone take advantage of their
experience.
In the second quarter, lone
increased their lead by four
while letting the substitues get
a lot of playing time in. The
score at the end of the half was
30 to 6.

The second half was an even
match as lone scored evenly
with the Pirates at IB apiece

The last quarter belonged to
the subs again, but they were
out scored 10 - 11, ending the
game at 56 - 27.
"It was a good experience
for us. We played everyone
and everyone played a lot of
time. That is what J V. ball is.

In the third quarter, the
Cards lost their lead and were
down by one. Mark Meyers
dumped in six points but even
with his efforts they were not
able to keep the lead once
owned by the junior birds.
In the fourth quarter, the
Grizzlies took command and
racked up 11 more points than
the Cardinals, outscoring the
birds 21 -10. Gibbs and Boxes
were the two who rambled the
Bears past the birds by 12.
Boxes had eight and Gibbs
collected 11 to make up 19 of
the 21 quarter points. Once
again, it was the Helix IV. 's
over the lone J.V.'s 56 - 44.

overcome the Pirates and lost

ted "It was a pretty even
game until the end. Although
we made fewer mistakes than
Riverside, they handled the
pressure better in the closing
quarters of the game. That
made the difference,"
Fggers went on to say "Our
players have a lot of inexper
ience but at this point in the
season, we've got to stop using
that as an excuse. We have
enough games under our belts
to overcome this factor."
