Cardiac Cards suffer
By ( Rir. GUTIERREZ
The Cardiac Cards had a
mild stroke last Tuesday
night, Dec. 21, as the Mus
tangs successfully defended
their home court and defeated
the Cardinals by nine points,
points,
The rematch between the
Cardinals and the Mustangs
caused anxiety on the Cardi
nals' bench, and revenge on
the Mustangs' bench as the
birds from lone defeated the
Mustangs the previous week.
The Cardinals started the
game with the same frame of
mind as the week before but
due to the Cardinals" inability
to hold onto the ball, and
pressure that was applied by
Heppner, the Cardinals had
too many turnovers and only
16 rebounds for the game.
The first half was a replay of
the Tuesday before as the
game was all defense and
little offense for either team.
Although the first half was not
what many people would call
"good basketball," it seemed
to be beneficial for both teams
but more so for the Mustangs
of Heppner, as they finished
the first half leading by five.
29 to 24
The second half, particular
ly the third quarter, was all
Heppner as the Mustangs out
scored the Cardinals and in
creased their lead to 17. The
Mustangs opened their attack
with a stall offense or a
spread-out-four-corner of
fense that the Cardinals at
tempted to counterattack with
a man-to-man defense, but to
no avail. The Mustangs rattled
off six straight points as Jeff
Orr was on the receiving end
of three alley-oop passes
which fell through the iron for
Heppner.
In the fourth quarter, lone
tried something else. They
went into a half-count-trap-defense
that enabled them to
stop the Mustang's ball from
rolling and catch up to within
nine before the final buzzer
sounded, ending the game at
53 to 44 with the Mustangs
victorious.
The Cardinals will meet the
Umapine Chiefs on January 4.
as they start their Big Sky
Conference season w ith hopes
of earning a seat in the district
tournament at Umatilla.
