Editorial
You've heard it before,
tve're saying it again
Don't drink and drive
If drinking will be a part of ringing in the new year for you,
do everyone a favor, including yourself - don't drive.
Captain Jim Phillips of the Oregon State Police, Salem,
reports that during the first nine months of 1982, 73 percent of
all drivers killed in one-vehicle accidents had a blood alcohol
' content of 0.10 or higher. Two deaths in Morrow County
involved drivers that had been drinking, he said. A reading of
0.10 is the reading that establishes a person as legally under
the influence of intoxicating liquor in Oregon.
To combat the problem of drunken drivers, the Morrow
County Sheriff's Department and the Hermiston office of the
Oregon State Police will be conducting traffic checks at
random locations throughout the county.
Any driver suspected to be under the influence will be
required to submit to a sobriety test at the scene. Those
believed to be under the influence will be arrested and taken
to the nearest jail.
After being arrested, the person will be asked to take a test
to determine his blood alcohol content on an intoxilyzer
machine. If the person refuses to take the test, his driver's
license must automatically be suspended for 120 days, even if
it is later determined that he wasn't legally drunk. The fact
that a person refused the test may also be admitted as
evidence in court.
Although getting behind the wheel after only a few drinks
may not seem to be much of a risk, consider, if nothing else,
being slapped with a possible $2,500 fine and or one year in
jail. Not to mention that if you are convicted of driving under
the influence your driver's license must be suspended for one
' year. That wouldn't be too pleasant a way to start '83, would
it?
If you're going to be away from home New Year's Eve,
make arrangements to stay off the road. It could save you
some money, a lot of grief, even someone's life - maybe your
own.
