Scout's food drive
a huge success
A canned food drive spon
sored by local Cub Scouts was
a huge success, reports Helen
Riehl. a chairperson for the
activity. Over $1,100 in food
and cash was donated from
residents in Heppner. Lexing
ton and lone. Fanners in
outlying areas also brought
food to town for the drive.
Riehl said.
Contributions to the food
drive, which was held Satur
day. Dec. 11. were presented
to the Heppner Neighborhood
Center for their Christmas
basket project and to help
stock shelves at the center.
The baskets and remaining
food will be distributed to
needy families in the area.
To the editor:
I have been a resident of
Morrow County on and off for
over SO years and my wife was
raised in Heppner. We can
both remember when it was a
great honor for a young lady to
be chosen to be an ambassa
dor for Morrow County, as
Morrow County Fair and Rode
royalty The entire commun
ity backed the queen and
princesses. Whole families
supported these daughters of
Morrow County and some
pretty terrific traditions were
horn.
We've seen these same tra
ditions stomped into the
ground and a horrible apathy
grow in the community be
cause the Rodeo Board has
forgotten they serve the coun
ty and not their own self-interests:
each of them trving to be
more important than the
other We eot n cood look at
this mess firsthand when our
dauehter represented Morrow
Countv last summer as a
Morrow Countv Fair and
Rodeo princess Because of
pettiness, unethical proce
dure, general disorganisation,
anathv and traditions being
trashed, mv daughter wrote
the following letter to the
rodeo hoard, after she had
heen called hv Judv Currin.
their secretary, who congrat
ulated and informed Nancy
that she had been chosen by
the hoard to represent Morrow
Countv as the Queen of the
Morrow County Fair and

TO WHOM IT MAY
CONCERN:
Dear Board Members:
Thank vou for the honor of

stipulations, of which you
were aware when vou voted on

to inform vou that I do not
intend to accept vour nomina
tion Sincerely.
Nancy Paine
I'd like to puhlically con
gratulate mv daughter for
having the character, and
loyally to tradition, and the
iust plain good sense to write
the hoard and say "Thanks,
but no thanks."
Congratulations, Nancy.
Your family is proud of you.
Somehodv has to do the right
thing because it is right.
Sincerely.

To the editor:
I'm damned mad at the way
my vote in opposition to the
Congressional pay raise has
been distorted and misrepre
sented by the news wire ser
vices and others. I am writing
so your readers can clearly
understand what happened,
and why. in the House of
Representatives.
By law. all members of
Congress would have been
given a $17,300 pay increase if
the House had taken no action.
Mud
As a member, of Congress
opposed to any pay increase, 1
had opportunities on two con
secutive votes to strike a blow
at the size of the increase, and
then try to kill the whole kit
and kaboodle.
On the first vole, the choice
was between $17,300 or $9,000,
I voted to lower the raise to the
lower figure, limiting the
damage if. God forbid, the
attempt to kill the raise failed,
on a tie vote of 208-208.
That's the chronology, and
my strategy, on the votes. If
the wire services can't under
stand that, then they belong In
a slraitjacket. More impor
tant, the Issue Isn't over yet,
and I'll continue to work
against a pay raise for mem
bers of Congress at this time,
when so many of my constl-'
tuents are out of work, run
ning out of unemployment
benefits, and with so many
others living In fear of losing
their jobs.
Sincerely,
Les AuCoin
