lone takes Spray in close one, 44-42

The lone Cardinals met the
Spray Eagles in a game last
Friday night that ended with
lone victorious, 44 42.
The Cardinals played head
to head with the Eagles all
through the game as one team
never really outscored the
other by a drastic margin.
In the first quarter, Donnie
Taylor paced lone with light
points and kept the Cardinals
looking good in the first period
as the quarter ended with a tie
score, 14 -14.
In the second period, lone
was a little slow but managed
to keep the game under con
trol. The Eagles took the lead
by six and ended the firsthalf
26 - 20 with Spray on top.
At the beginning of the
second half, lone seemed,
again, like they were going to
start slow, but soon the pace
picked up. The Cards gained
momentum and flew to regain
the lead by two and ended the
third quarter, 36 - 34, lone.
Tim Patton and Craig Gutier
rez each added six points to
turn the game in Ione's favor.
In the last quarter, the two
Condon Blue Devils defeated
by lone Cards, 53-43

basketball game between the
lone Cardinals and the Condon
Blue Devils. lone was the
victorious team, defeating the
Devils 53 - 43.
In the first quarter, lone
jumped out to a 12 - 10 lead

onto a two point lead. With
eight seconds remaining in the
game, Mark Dumler of Spray
had a 10-foot chance to tie the
game, but failed, causing lone
to pick up its second win of
the season with a final score of
44 - 42.
Coach Del La Rue had this to
say about the performance
"The game was really close
and I think we can learn a lot
from the pressure. We had a
few places where it went
pretty good and places where
it wasn't so good. We played
better the second half, espec
ially our rebounding was
much better. I think we've got
a starting point and some
direction to follow to more
improvement."

Tournament this coming Fri
day and will meet Mount
Vernon in Game 2 of The
Tournament at 4 30 Friday
afternoon. If lone happens to
win. they play at 7.30 Satur
day night. If they happen to
lose, they will play at 4. 30 that
same da v.

comes turnovers. lone turned
the ball over an even 20 times

stated "I'm still not very
happy about our ball handling.

Cordinal goes high for shot
The Cardinals kept their
momentum up in the second
quarter as they increased
their lead by five. The half
time score was 25 - 18. Tim
Patton again was the major
contributor with six points,
followed by Howard Leavitt
with four.
The second half started out
a little more on the even side
as the Devils decreased the
Cardinal lead by one and .
outscored the birds 12 - 11 in
the third quarter. The key
factor of this quarter was the
free throw shooting by Denny
Starr as he was 4 - 4 at the line
in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was pro
lone as the red birds of lone
again dominated, putting 17
. points through the bucket
compared to Condon's 13.
Condon's Mike McLane had
the hot hand as he zeroed in on
the hold and racked up 10
of his game high 24 points in
this quarter.
The Cardinals, who again
improved over their last per
formance, shot 37 percent
from the field and 64 percent
from the line. Tim Patton was
high scorer for lone with 23
points, followed by Craig
Gutierrez with nine and Denny
Starr with eight. Starr led the
team with six assists and
Patton and Taylor led the
team in rebounds, 17 boards
between them.
Ione's Coach Del LaRue had
this to say about the Tuesday
night performance "I was
much happier with the defense
that was played. We really
play well defensively. Our
rebounding was better and the
play we got from the bench
pleases me."
lone will play Friday and
Saturday, Dec. 17 and 18 in the
Long Creek Holiday Tourn
ament and expects to meet
Mt. Vernon in the first game
at 4:30 pm. Friday. If lone
wins, they will play at 7:30
pm. Saturday night, if they
lose, they will play at 4:30
p.m. The other two teams
scheduled to compete in the
tournament are Ukiah and
Long Creek.

concert at the Heppner High
School gym this Friday. Dec.
17. at 7 30 p.m.
Instrumental and vocal se
lections of Christmas music as
well as general concert music
will be featured, said music
instructor Kitty Coon. Sixth
grade square dancers will also
perform, she said.

The lone Junior High girls'
basketball team evened their
record to 1 -1 as they beat the
Wheeler County Falcons last
Thursday, 42 - 25.
The first quarter was even,
as both teams had four points.
In the second period, lone put
11 points on the scoreboard,
compared with the Falcons'
seven to make the halftime
score 15 to 11 in Ione's favor.
The third stanza saw the two
teams score the same amount
of points, as they did in the
second quarter. The Cardinals
led 26 - 18.
In the fourth period, lone
had a 16 -7 advantage to win 42
- 25.
The Cardinals' Deena Hams
led all scorers with 18 points.
Sandi Wright added 12, Patty
McElligott had 10 and Mary
ann Alvarado put in two.
