ed by the United Church
Board for World Ministries of
the United Church of Christ to
develop libraries in the mis
sion schools of Zimbabwe,
Africa. Fred Martin, lone, and
the Rev. Cathy Barker,
I.U.C.C. pastor, are corporate
members of that board.
A recent 14-year war for
independence in this South
African country took a tre
mendous toll in property and
lives as well as in educational
and medical facilities. This
project will help to provide
educational materials for the
more than 50 former mission
schools to help them train
students more effectively in
reading skills. "Education is
one of the best ways of helping
people," Barker said.
"Christian values can be
shared in this way and the
students learn ways to help
themselves." she continued.
Nationally, the United
Church Board for World
Ministries hopes to send 10.000
used books to Zimbabwe by
September 1983 and to supply
sets of encyclopedias and
magazine subscriptions for
each of the mission schools.
lone school teachers have
gathered five boxes of old
textbooks for the project and
church members have also
contributed books. The United
Church Women are helping to
pay postage, and further
donations are asked for that
expense. Barker said.
The Jr. High Youth Fellow
ship has chosen to collect
funds in "Trick-or-treat"
fashion on Sunday. October 31,

lone Jr. High defeats Echo, 14-6
By CRAIG GUTIERREZ
The lone Jr. High football
team played Echo on lone'g
home turf last Thursday. lone
was victorious by a score of 14
.
Ione's Ken Snider was first
to score in the second quarter
on a blast play up the middle
from a couple of yards out.
Dustin Padberg added the
two-point conversion.
lone was being held to short
vardnge when Echo went Into
a wide defense and ended the
long-yard gainers on end runs.
But lone started running in
side with equal success.
In the third quarter, Ken
Snider again blasted into the
endzone for six more but this
time the conversion failed and
ended Ione's scoring. Echo
scored by picking up a fum
bled ball on Ione's 30-yard line
and ran it to the endzone for
which ended their scoring for
the day.
Coach Ron Mack commen
ted "We played excellent de
fense with the front line doing
cood blocking. The kids also
played very good offensively
but let many scoring opportu
nities slip away. We domina
ted the whole game but just
scouldn't put it in the end
zone." Mack credited Kenny
Snider. Kierin Doherty and
Gary Rea for excellent play,
both offensively and defen
sively. lone meets Condon at 1 : 30
p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28.
