lone shuts down Cascade Locks Pirates, 40-0
By CRAIG GUTIERREZ
The lone Cardinals stayed
alive in the Big Sky Confer
ence football standings by
defeating the Cascade Locks
Pirate 40-0 lt Thurwtey.
The Cardinals came out of the
locker room with jfi" in tneir
eyes and they knew it was a
"do or die" game. If they won
they could go on with hopes of
making the finals, if they lost
they would have to hang up
their uniforms at the end of
the season.
lone dominated the Pirates
from the start of the game.
The Cards kicked-off and on
Cascade Locks' first play
from scrimmage Ione's Tim
Patton intercepted the ball.
The interception led to Ione's
first after Craig Hams scam
pered 67 yards into the end
zone. The extra point failed.
The Cards scored again early
in the first quarter when Den
ny Starr connected with Tim
Patton from seven yards out.
Again the extra point failed.
I
Ione's tough defense was the
key to their successful night
on the gridiron as they shut
out the Pirates throughout the
game. Their defense was the
cause of their next touchdown
drive that ended with Denny
Starr sneaking in for the T.D.
from one yard out. Starr's
touchdown ended the scoring
for the first quarter.
In the second quarter, lone
came out of the huddle, again,
seeming to have one thing in
mind. The Cardinals put in
two more TD.'s in the first
half with a seven-yard run by
Howard Leavit and a 26-yard
pass from Starr to Patton to
end the first half.
In the second half. lone
slacked up and didn't score,
but the defense also held
Cascade Locks from putting
the ball in the end zone at all.
Ione's Craig Hams ended up
with 143 yards rushing, How
ard Leavitt had 91 yards rush
ing and Denny Starr had 31
yards on the ground and 139
yards in the air.
Coach Gordon Meyers said
The first half the offense and
defense played very well but
lacked in the second half. We
need to play with more inten
sity throughout the game to
win the rest. We won the first
game of the 'must wins' and
we can't afford to lose any
more in order to make it to the
playoffs."
lone-Arlington games have
always been imporotant and
presently Arlington is leading
the league. If we want any
playoff contention we have to
beat, first. Arlington, then,
win the rest of our games, the
coach said.
lone will travel to Arlington
Friday for the 1:30 pjn.
battle.

Interim National Forest receipts to be distributed

the Pirotei 40-0 in
Bowling News
Forty states and Puerto
Rico will shars $99 million in
interim payments as their
part of national forest receipts
collected in fiscal year 1982,
Secretary of Agriculture John
R. Block has announced.
Oregon will receive the lar
gest amount, $36.8 million.
"We expect the total amount
owed to the states will be
about $132 million for this
year," Block said.
The payments represent
about 75 percent of the total
amount due to the states from
receipts collected for use of
national forest products and
services during the fiscal
year.
"Interim funds are made
available as soon as possible
following the end of the fiscal
year (Sept.30), rather than
holding them until final com
putation." Block said. "The
remainder of the funds will be
made available in early De
cember after the actual re
ceipts for the fiscal year have
been determined.
"By law, 25 percent of the
revenues collected by th"
Forest Service from timber
sales, grazing, recreation,
mineral and land uses on the
national forests are made
available to the states where
the national forests are loca
ted." The funds are to be used
for schools and roads.
Last year, the states receiv
ed $228 million as their share
of national forest receipts.
Block attributed the reduction
in receipts to depressed tim
ber markets. National forest
timber sales contribute the
greatest amount to the fund.
