Cfcprey nost that Peterson ha protected since 1954
Gus Peterson accept award from Bob Krein.
Gus Peterson of Monument
was presented a Wildlife Ap
preciation Award from Bob
Krein, wildlife biologist for the
Oregon Department of Fish
and Wildlife. Heppner, on
September 8. He received the
recognition for his long term
endeavor of protecting and
maintaining an active osprey
nesting site on his property
since 1954.
Peterson discovered the
nest shortly after he purchas
ed the Top Ranch, which is
located about five miles north
of Monument. The following
year. Kinzua Corp. logged
fc oiiun ch .

property that lay adjacent to
Peterson's and was within 200
yards of the osprey nest. He
made sure that Kinzua and the
logging contractor were
aware of the nest site and
asked them to be careful and
not disturb it. After the log
ging was completed. Gus had
an opportunity to purchase the
logged area. To do so he had to
sell some of his timber to
finance the venture. It would
have been cheaper and easier
to log his land that lay ad
jacent to the existing logged
area, but Peterson was afraid
the osprey nest would be
disturbed so he elected to log
on another portion of his pro
perty. Since that time he has
entered into an active timber
thinning program. Most of his
timbered land has been or is
planned to be thinned, with the
exception of the osprey nest
site, the wildlife biologist said.
Osprey nests are typically
located next to or near to a
large body of water, either a
stream or lake. The nest site
on Peterson's property is
located about five miles from
the John Day River. The
osprey has been observed
bringing fish from Bull
Prairie Reservoir, which is 12
miles away as an osprey flies.
Krein explained. Ospreys
diets consist of fish entirely.
The birds begin their nesting
efforts in April or May and
usually produce 3 eggs. Nor
mally ospreys leave the nest
site near the end of July.
Krein said records to date
show that the oldest recorded
osprey was 21 years old when
it died. This probably in
dicates that the pair of os
preys using the nest now are
not the original pair of birds
that Gus discovered in 1954."
Peterson stated that the nest
has been active every year
that he can remembers. There
are two nests at the site,
probably used alternately by
the birds. Krein said.
This was the first Wildlife
Appreciation Award to be pre
sented in this area, he concluded.
