By this time in September you may have yourself pretty
well scheduled for fall and winter activities. If you are not
completely programmed-get with it and don't be caught
without plenty of action to fill the months between gardening
and food preservation and the time when planting gardens
begins strain.
Our off-the-main highway communities provide a good
variety of things in which family members of any age may
become involved. Back in pioneer days almost everything
worthwhile that got done in a community was done by
volunteers. Today the volunteer movement is on the uswing
again and is providing a happy, healthy way to keep occupied
and to bring cheer to others, too.
Men or women who enjoy children will find that their help
is greatly appreciated by the Scouting programs and by the
Campfire and Bluebird groups. Sharing time and talent with
one of the many excellent 4-H groups is a great way to gain
satisfaction. For some years volunteers have been giving
help in the elementary school reading program. They gain
joy by giving personal attention to children who need more
concentrated attention.
Your memories of the county fair should still be quite
fresh. That big annual, all-county production requires many
volunteers and much advance planning. Helping with the fair
can be a real learning experience and a great chance to meet
new folks and to form new friendships. Along with the fair,
the horse shows and the parade and rodeo couldn't exist
without volunteer management and many helpers.
If you like associating with senior citizens and helping with
their activities, you can surely be useful before, during and
after the senior meals on Wednesday noons at the
fairgrounds. If you can find time to visit at the Nursing Home
in the lower level of the Pioneer Memorial Hospital, your
friendship and cheerfulness can brighten the days of some
often lonesome folks there.
Being a volunteer at the Heppner Neighborhood Center
gives persons a chance to really help others who need a
temporary lift or aid in an emergency. This busy place
receives and dispenses needed clothing, emergency food and
much helpful advice and assistance.
The Neighborhood Center also offers sociability at its
Thursday afternoon craft times. Women of any age are
invited there to visit and to create craft items under skillful
instructors. This is a good place and time to make friendships
and to get acquainted with the Neighborhood Center and
those who have been helping there through the years.
There are many clubs and lodges in South Morrow Co. If
youa re tntersted in joining any special group, you need to
make your desire known to someone already in the group
who can tell you about any requirements the group might
have. Maybe you have a good idea for beginning a new club.
If your family is involved with horses, you will soon find
that you and your horses can join others here with the same
likes. During summer months the Heppner Swim Team
needs support and help which means advance planning
during the winter or early spring. Little League ball
regularly needs adult help and support.
Card playing of many sorts is around most of the year.
Several bingo evening groups are usually scheduled each
week during the winter months. -
The public library at Heppner is always pleased to have
volunteer help during weekday afternoons from 1 to 5 p.m. or
on Saturdays from 2 to 4 p.m. So, if you like books and people
you might give some time to the library. The county museum
curator says that just now she has plenty of volunteer help.
If you are interested in learning of pioneer matters and
building a good background in area and state history you
might inquire about Morrow County Historical Society
membership.
Blue Mountain Community College has announced the
schedule of classes being held here and elsewhere this fall.
Registration takes place next week. Those who want to move
ahead educationally should study the good variety of
learning opportunities. Two afternoons each week Adult
Basic Education classes are held in the Neighborhood
Center. What a good opportunity to complete high school or to
just improve some basic skills.
Sports-minded persons find that golf, tennis, bowling (with
help from a new instructor), billiards and, of course, jogging,
hiking, bicycling, much fishing and much seasonal hunting
are all very available here.
If your sporting activity tends to be the spectator type, then
you should keep schedules of the Heppner and lone school
sports handy. You might become a steady booster for one or
more girls' or boys' teams.
Our county has a fine number of very helpful churches. If
you have not been attending one of them, this is an excellent
. time to begin. Every age is most welcome. Each church
provides good leadership. Often there are groups within the
church that offer special enjoyment for family members; the
choir, Bible study groups, children, youth and adult
activities. Men and women are always needed to carry on
many activities in the churches.
You've undoubtedly heard the saying "The devil finds
work for idle hands." That may not appeal to you but the
idea of keeping active is a very good one. A special friend
pointed out to me "If we don't ever get involved, don't ever
' try to help other folks nobody will miss us when we are
gone." I believe her. She is a person who will surely be
missed as she is constantly helping others.
Arts Council
The Pendleton Arts Council
is sponsoring a program,
CAST, designed to develop
more community support for
the visual and performing arts
in Pendleton, announced a
council spokesperson.
On Saturday, September 25.
there will be a donation - art
auction at 8 p.m. at St. Mary's
Parish Hall, 800 S.E. Court,
Pendleton. There will be many
art items plus a variety of
other donated merchandise
and-or services.
Admission to the auction is
free. Cash and checks will be
accepted for auctioned items.
Bill McPherson will be the
auctioneer. There will also be
refreshments and a no host
wine table, the spokesperson
said.
Artists or craftspeople are
invited to donate artwork to
the auction. Items should be
taken to St. Mary's Parish
Hall on Friday, September 24
between 5 and 7 p.m. Donation
sponsors CAST program
slips will be provided by the
Pendleton Arts Council.
Proceeds from the auction
will go to the CAST Program
that will bring Dan Diggles, an
actor from New York City to
the Pendleton community
during the week of October 11.
