USDA announces changes in farm storage facility loan program The U.S. Department of Ag riculture has changed its farm storage facility loan program to increase the number of farmers eligible for storage loans. Secretary John Block said recently. Block said the changes will enable the USDA to lend farm ers money to build facilities to store up to two years produc tion of eligible crops. Ths facilities will be in addition to any present on-farm facilities being used to store grain held in the grain reserve program. Previously, farmers were lim ited to borrowing to build storage for one year's crop, including storage used for the reserve program. Block said only farmers who participated in USDA's acre age reduction program would be eligible for the program. Court in Heppner on Wednesday, Aug. 15. The Lankfords don't know how the porcupine got into their back yard, but their dog. Peppermint Patty, probably hopes it won't return. The dog had a run-in with the animal and apparently the dog lost. Patty ended up with a face full of quills and lost an eye. For example, if a farmer had a $30,000 outstanding farm facil ity loan, the maximum he or she could borrow with a new loan is $20,000. The secretary said that an other change provides that soybean production can be counted in determining stor age needs under the program provided there is a crop on the farm that is eligible for the reserve program. The fall rain and snow can be avoided by cutting now when the weather is good. The wood will also have time to dry properly and will pro duce more heat this winter. Material cut in the fall will be wetter; it will produce less heat and more soot, he said. Firewood areas have been designated and marked with signs. Cutting is permitted only in these areas. The maps that are a part of the permit show the location of these areas and explain what mater ial may be cut. These permits are free when wood is for personal use. Permits are available on a self service basis at the district office at all times, seven days a week. State laws require a permit in possession whenever wood is being cut or transferred. Cutting in the wrong place or cutting the wrong material can result in violators being cited into Fed eral Court. Several recent cases have resulted in sen tences ranging from $100 to $1,500 and probation. In ad dition the wood was confiscat ed. Confiscated wood is distri buted to senior citizens, he added.
