Tole painters
ready for fair
They are adding the last tiny
dabs of paint and the final
polish to their tole painting
exhibits riht now. Under the
guidance of three leaders they
are carefully packing them in
tissue, ready to transport to
county fair, and probably on to
the State Fair in Salem. The
Morrow Tole Painters are
famous through out the slate
for bringing home all the
purple riblons. They've work
ed hard and long again this
year . , now they are ready for
fair! leaders Eileen Padberg,
Phyllis Piper, Linda Padberg
list fifteen members this year
who vary in aRe from fourth
grade through seniors in high
school. Regardless of age,
they are skilled with the
brush. Creative articles paint
ed may be a clock or a cutting
board, recipe holders or even
a coal bucket ... or other
decorative and useful items.
Each chooses the article they
wish to paint, and the design.
It takes time and patience to
create their outstanding ex
hibits. It also takes dedication,
skill, and love from leaders
who give so much time to
teach the fifteen 4-H members
the many skills required. Tole
painting is a skill members
can use and enjoy for a
lifetime to beautify a home,
perhaps a career, or items to
sell.
See their outstanding pro
jects at county fair on Mon
day. We feel sure they'll be off
to slate fair again this year!
Freshman
chose theme
By KOCKR RECORDS
This year's Fair theme,
"Harvest Through The Ages"
was submitted by Janelle Mc
Elhaney, a freshman at Hep
pner High School.
Janelle, along with 47 other
Heppner High School students
wrote suggested themes for
this year's fair as a writing
assignment in their language
arts classes.
The students narrowed the
field down to five before hav
ing the Fair Committee make
the final selection.
Larry Cerullo. language
arts teacher said, "It's a great
idea -- it gives more students a
chance to participate In the
fair."
Roger Records, fair com
mittee chairman, said that all
the themes suggested to the
fair committee were very
good and it was not an easy
task to select the one to use.
The Fair Committee ap
preciates the input from the
youth in the county, we would
like to continue this method of
choosing our fair theme.
Next year we would like to
have the schools at lone and
Boardman-Irrigon compete as
well.
