weather, golf remains a popu
lar recreational activity for
area residents, reported a
Willow Creek Country Club
spokesperson. On Saturday,
July 31, 21 men and women
ignored the heat at a W.C.C.C.
visitation for golfers from
Kinzua Hills. On Sunday,
August 1, 40 people participat
ed in a family barbecue play
event. The wind that evening

Saturday were Ed Gunderson
- low gross (66); Elmer Pal
mer low net (67-17-50); Dick
Bigelow - long drive; and Ed
Gunderson - K.P. Rick Johns
ton won second low gross with
a 68 and Vern Willis, second
low net with a 76-23-53.
The women played nine
holes and local winners were
Bev Gunderson and Linda
Shaw low gross (41); Wanda
Willis -low net (39-19-20); and
Bev Gunderson long drive.
Bev Gunderson and Wanda
Willis served lunch. Following .
the meal, a couples Chapman
was won by Elmer Palmer
and Linda Shaw.
The winning team at Sun
day's barbecue posted an in
credible score of 27. The team
consisted of John Shaw, Mary
Beamer, Bev Gunderson, Her
man Winter and Jon Mitchell.
Mitchell also won K.P, on No.
four with a drive that landed
only 18 Inches from the hole.
The second place team was
made up of C.C. Carmichael,
Muriel Palmer, Floyd Jones,
Juanita Carmichael and Mar
cel Jones.
The team of Ed and Mary
Lee Hiemstra, Ray French
and Alma Green tied with
Elmer Palmer, Lorena Jones,
Howard Bryant and Joyce
Winter for third place.
Long drive winners were
Fuzzy Swiensenberger and
Linda Shaw. ,
In charge of the event were
the Beamers. Jones's, Bry- '
ants, and Palmers, the spokes
person concluded.

Road Report
The Morrow County Public
Works Department has
released the following Work
Report for the week ending
July 31 :
Pot holes were patched with
cold mix on the following
roads: Pine City to Lena,
Miller Cutsforth, Hardman
Ridge, Myers and Blackhorse
Road.
Base rock and gravel were
spread on Meadowbrook and
the Joe Kenny Road.
Cold mix and hot mix were
used for patching pot holes on
Patterson Ferry Road. The
road sides of Patterson Junc
tion Road were cleaned.
The road crew is now being
dispatched from our new shop
in Lexington. A substantial
amount of travel time should
be saved since this site is more
centrally located with the
county's road system.

Wheatland Pomona Grange
District No. 29 met at Anson
Wright Park on Saturday for
the regular meeting with Mas
ter Rolland Johnson presid
ing. Roll call found four offic
ers absent.
The memorial service was
held in the morning with Mary
Wright, Judy Stevens, Freda
Sloeom. Mildred Wright, Edna
Peck, Muriel Palmer and Dor
ris Graves taking part. Light
ed tapers and flowers were
used to decorate for the ser
vice. Harold Peck was in
charge of hymn recordings for
background music.
A bountiful lunch was enjoy
ed at noon, after which a cake
walk was held. Dot Halvorsen
gave two readings and the rest
of the day was spent in visiting
and playing cards. Distin
guished guest was Morton
Wolverton., Eastern Oregon
deputy. Roll call was as fol
lows. Lexington two. Willows
- two. Rufus - 11, Columbia -one
Rhea Creek - 16.
Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Jones
were Haines callers on Sunday
to attend the reunion of the
descendants of Thomas
Spence. There were about 60
people present who enjoyed
the day. some coming from
Arizona: Texas; Provo, Utah;
Weiscr, Idaho; as well as
Oregon. Family pictures were
enjoyed and more were taken.
A fine potluck dinner was
enjoyed.

time with her sister and her
husband, Mr. and Mrs. Bill
Padberg.
Pat Townsend of Portland is
visiting friends and relatives
in Morrow Co., staying with
her sister and new husband,
Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Craber,
and friends. Mr. and Mrs.
Louis Halvorsen.
Beulah Hynd of Hermiston
Seattle, Wash. The Messen
gers then spent some time at
Springfield with the Franklin
Messenger family and saw a
new art center building being
constructed. Enroute home
they visited Mr. and Mrs. Clay
Grace and their daughter at
Albany; Mr. and Mrs. Carroll
Messenger and Mr. and Mrs.
Gerry Messenger in the Port
land area; an aunt of Mr.
Messengers. Ruth Messenger,
was a caller at the Ken Pal
mer home on Friday.
Mr. and Mrs, Raymond
Peck and son visited in Herm
iston during the weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Campbell
of Dallas, Texas have been
visiting at the homes of his
brothers, Bob Campbell and
Mr. and Mrs. Roger Camp
bell. He was a Portland caller
recently to visit his son, Wil
liam. Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Messen
ger. Sr. have been visiting for
the last week with relatives.
The first stop was at the home
of her brother, Ray Barlow
and his daughter and family at
Eugene, They were met there
by a brother and his wife, Mr.
and Mrs. Ed Barlow and their
daughter and her husband,
Mr. and Mrs. David Rinkton of
Grass Valley, Calif. Others
visiting with the group and
enjoying a family barbecue
were Mr. and Mrs. Bob Walk
er and Mrs. Walker's mother,
Blanche Barlow; Mr. and
Mrs. Franklin Messenger and
family of Springfield; and Mr.
and Mrs. Glen Mallory of
