Budworm
spraying
completed
Aerial spraying of a western
spruce budworm Infestation In
eastern Oregon has been com
pleted and preliminary sampl
ing of larvae has shown very
good results, according to the
spray project's direcotr, Ran
dall Perkins.
The four-week project took
place on the Umatilla and
Malheur National Forests and
on private lands protected by
the Oregon Department of
Forestry near the com
munities of Heppner, John
Day and Uklah. Perkins said
sampling on two of the four
units sprayed has shown a bug
kill rate of about 95 percent.
He said the rate might be
lower on remaining units be
cause of extended rainy per
iods that delayed the project.
Perkins said final results
are expected In about , two
weeks and he expects the
overall results to be success
ful. He also said this sum
mer's annual insect survey
will help determine what fu
ture control efforts may be
needed.
In all, the USDA-Forest Ser
vice and Oregon Department
of Forestry effort resulted in
spraying 178.549 acres of
Douglas-fir and white fir tim
ber. The last 1,300 acres were
treated Saturday morning,
July 17.
Sevin 4-Oil was used on all
by 9,195 acres. The smaller
acreage was treated with Or
thene as an extra effort in
several drainages to protect
the aquatic insects vital to the
diet of the young Chinook
salmon. Perkins said Forest
Service and Oregon biologists
will continue to monitor the
effort and release results of
the monitoring when it has
been completed.
Lack of total federal, state,
and private financing had re
sulted in reducing the number
of acres scheduled to be treat
ed from 208.OOO to 133,000 by
the time the project started
June 20. About 55,000 acres
were added to the project,
Perkins said, "thanks to an
extremely favorable contract
bid price and our taking ad
vantage of opportunities to
economize during the project
operation."
Cost of the project is es
timated to be $1.6 million,
about a 36 percent savings
over the original estimate,
Perkins said.
In addition to 164,463 acres
of National Forest lands on the
Umatilla and Malheur Nation
al Forests, 14,086 acres of'
private lands were treated.
The state of Oregon and the
Forest Service each provided
12'4 percent of the financing
for private land treatment and
private landowners paid the
remaining 75 percent.

Thursday's market.
MARKET TREND: The sale was short in both cattle and
buyers. The weather finally turning off hot kept the ranchers
in the field trying to get hay in while the weather holds. Cows
held the strongest while heifers dropped back down to where
they were two weeks ago. The sheep market dropped several
dollars due to a lack of places to send them to be slaughtered.
NEXT SALE: Thursday, July 29, with some early
consignments of yearlings and dry cows.
