James Joseph Higgins
LAGRANDE - James
Joseph Higgins, 69, a former
Heppner resident, died July 21
at the Walla Walla Veteran's
Hospital, Walla Walla, Wash.
He was born May 21, 1913 in
Heppner to James and leath
ering Maguire Higgins. He
lived in Heppner and attended
Heppner schools. At age 17 he
moved to Pendleton, and 17
years later, moved to La
Grande. On June 28. 1952, he married
Edna Sheya. He worked for
Union Pacific Railroad at La
Grande for 40 years.
Mr. Higgins was a member
of B.P.O.E. 433, LaGrande,
and the LaGrande Country
Club.

Saints' Episcopal Church in

at Olney Cemetery, Pendle
ton. Survivors include his wife,
Edna, LaGrande; daughters

Higgins, both of LaGrande;
one sister, Kathleen Fehren

V.F.W. raffle
a. success
A Morrow County V.F.W.
and Auxiliary No. 4184 raffle,
held at the Sidewalk Sale last
Saturday was a success, said a
spokesperson from the local
post. Clayton Sweek of Hep
pner won the popcorn popper,
popping com and oil.
The raffle netted $21.75
which was sent to a Cancer
Aide and Research Fund. The
fund is a state-wide project
that the V.F.W. and Auxiliary
participate in each year.
Thomas Edison had a col
lection of 5,000 birds.

In the Boardman-Irrigon
area potholes were patched on
portions of Frontage Road.
Homestead Road, Willson
Road, Pole Line Road, Irrigon
Ordinance Road, Bombing
Range Road, Irrigon Paterson
Road and Patterson Junction.
In the south end of the
county cold mix patching was
done on M. Baker Road, lone
Gooseberry, Kilkenny, Upper
Willow Creek, Clyers, and
Blackhorse Roads.
Gravel was spread on Fuller
Canyon and Meadowbrook
Road.

calls and cases during the past
On July 19, Jeffrey Steven
Simmons, 19, of Boardman,
was issued a citation for alleg
ed Driving While Suspended
by a Boardman police officer.
On July 20. Geoffrey
Stephen Smith. 32, of Pendle
ton, was arrested by a Morrow
County Sheriff's deputy for
alleged Second Degree Crim
inal Mischief. He was lodged
at the Wasco County Jail.
On July 23. Dana B. Robin
son. 28, of Boardman, was
arrested by a Boardman
police officer on a lane
County sheriff's office war
rant for alleged Failure to Pay
a Fine for a Second Degree
Criminal Trespass charge and
a Marion County sheriff's of
fice warrant for alleged Con
tempt - Non Payment of Child
Support. Robinson was lodged
at the Umatilla City Jail.
Also on July 23. a fight
occurred at the Hitchin' Post
tavern. Boardman at about
1:48 a.m.; involving about 20
people. Donald L. Gilkey. 28.
and Dean Q. Gilkey. 19, were
arrested by Boardman police
for alleged Second Degree
Criminal Trespass. Both post
ed bail and were released.
In another July 23 incident,
a fire was reported at the
Dexter Miles residence, Ful
ler Canyon, Heppner, at 2.03
p.m. The Heppner Fire De
partment responded.
In a fourth July 23 incident,
a motor vehicle accident oc
curred about 6:50 p.m. near
the Dodge City Inn. Board
man, involving David R. Har
ris, 35, of Redmond and
Michael G. Vorhees. 30, of
Umatilla. Harris was taken to
Consolidated Good Shepherd
Hospital by a private citizen.
Vorhees was cited for alleged
Failure to Yield Right-of-Way
and Harris was cited for al
legedly having No Insurance.
-The Morrow County sheriff's
office handled the accident.
On July 24. vandalism was
reported to the Heppner
Police Department of signs at
the U.S. Forest Service build
ing, Heppner. Broken beer
bottles were also found. One
sign was destroyed. Value of
the sign is $154. Other signs
were damaged.
In a second July 24 incident,
Henry Krebs of lone reported
the theft of an unknown
amount of gas from his ranch
at Cecil. A Morrow County
sheriff's deputy responded to
the call.
