learns about cacti
The lone Garden Club met
at the home of Kathy
Tellechea with Dorothy Bur
cham and Joyce Buchanan as
hostesses on July 14.
Mrs. Tellechea told the
group about raising cacti. She
has seventy of the some seven
hundred varieties. She stated
that all cacti are succulents,
but not all succulents are
cacti. Succulent means that
the plant stores moisture in its
stems and leaves. One of the
greatest problems of rasing
cacti is root rot, caused by too
much watering. They only
need watering once every two
weeks in the spring and sum
mer "nd once every four
wee; during winter. Most
cacti thrive at average house
temperature but need direct
sunlight. They should not be
misted or sprayed. Fertilizing
may be done in spring and
summer with something like
oxygen plus strength).
Cacti should be planted in a
mixture of half sand and half
planting mixture in a shallow
pot with a drainage hole in the
bottom. The plants grow well
if slightly root bound. To
propagate cacti, one may
break off the new shoots and
plant In soil, or by cutting off
the top of some varieties,
letting it heal and then plant
ing it.
The August meeting will be
at the home of Helen Martin,
with Loree Hubbard present
ing a program on peonies.
