FOOD FAC1SS FANCIES
It may teem like junt
fanry, but it'i quit true
entirely new kinds of food
planU are sprouting in the
test tubes of agricultural
laboratories around the
globe. The U.S. Department
of Agriculture has Junt an
nounrtd a number of Impor
tant breakthroughs, includ
ing the ucceful transfer
of a high protein gene from
a bean seed into a sunflower
cell, known now as the
"sunhean," and the suc
cessful union of the potato
and tomatoe, aptly called
the "pomatoe,"
Agricultural scientists are
using genetic engineering
techniques to develop plants
that have the same high
quality protein as animal
foods, and are also pest
resistant, can fertilize them
selves and enrich the soil,
and can grow and produce
well in drought conditions.
In fact, the nutritional equi
valent of beef may one day
be reproduced in plants,
sucb genetically engi
neered corn which may
someduy be known as "beef
corn." The experts at Bethesda
Research Laboratories (BR
L) think that genetic engine
ering techniques will be a
big part of the 1 9H0s, ex
panding into the dairy, bak
ing and brewing industries.
