A gravel truck at the Willow

The Heppner Fire Depart

Eucon employees. Roberts
said it took a maximum of 10

Ken Hunrinker, project en

Former Heppner Mayor Bill
Collins and his wife Daisy
have been selected as the June
15 to July 15 Heppner Yard of
the Month winners. They have
lived in Heppner since 1947
when they moved here from
Cottage Grove. The Collins
have four daughters, Judy,
Jean, Patti and Lisa. Only
Lisa is still living at home. ,
Daisy regularly decorates
the tables for the Heppner
Senior Mealsite with flowers
or shrubbery from their gar
den. They afe both mushroom
gathering enthusiasts and
have a great variety of other
skills.
About 15 years ago the
Collins' bought their home at
the south end of Main Street
from Bill Blake who told them
the house was built over 100
years ago by Frank Atkins. It
has been remodeled by sever
al owners since then.
Much of the Collins's garden
runs up the hill behind their
home. Daisy says the great
variety of rock-garden flowers
came "from starts given me
by friends." They brought the
reddish rocks they built into
the garden from down below
lone, she said. There has long
been a garden on the hillside,
but the Collins put in an
orchard, too, and they have
berries from which they make
wine. Through the years they
have generously shared their
garden's produce and flowers
with their community and
their many friends.
