provisions of the ltm3 wheat
program, details of which
must he announced by August

Block also said he wanted
comments on what method the
US Department of Agriculture
should use to determine crop
acreage bases, not only for
wheat but also for feed grains,
cotton and rice.
"Whatever methodology we
settle on for the wheat pro
gram likely will be used for
other program crops," Block
said. For this reason, it is
' important that we hear from
all segments of US agriculture
on this subject." he added.
The deadline for comment is
June 24. the news release
stated
A crop acreage base is the
numtMT of acres of a crop
from which a farmer must
reduce plantings if an acreage
reduction program is in effect.
For example, a farmer with a
KKi acre wheat base could
plant no more than KS acres of
wheat if a 15 percent acreage
reduction were in effect, ac
cording to the news release
Farmers who grow several
program crops such as corn,
wheal and barley ..would have
an acreage base established
for each crop, the news re
lease continued.
Block said he plans to an
nounce the 1981 program well
in advance of the August 15
statutory deadline Be said he
will study the public's recom
mendations and the most cur

crop conditions, productions
and consumption before he
makes final decisions, accord
ing to ASCS
Specifically, comments
requested on loan and pur
chase prices: the target price
and national program:

. lish an acreage reduction or a
set -aside program, and if so
the percentage of acreage
adjustment: whether I'SIM
should establish a voluntary
acreage reduction, and if so
the level of such a reduction:
provisions governing allow
ance of haying, grazing, and
conservation usage of set
aside acreage; a land diver
sion program and payment for
land diversion, offsetting com
pliance requirements for an
acreage reduction program:
and methods for determina
tion of 19K3 crop acreage
bases, the news release said.
