Obituaries
Ella E. Smith
HEPPNER - Ella E. Smith,
77, a resident of Morrow
County for many years, died
Friday, May 14, 1982, at Pio
neer Memorial Hospital, Hep
pner. She was born Feb. 15, 1905,
in Helena, Missouri, the
daughter of Grant and Aura
Willoughby Conway. She grad
uated from Redmond High
School and later received her
teaching degree. She taught in
Central Oregon for several
years. She married Hugh (Ted
Smith on Sept. 2, 1928 in
Redmond. They then ranched
in the lone area until Mr.
Smith retired in 1945. She was
a member of the lone Topic
Club, the Heppner Book
worms, the Heppner Method
ist Church and the Untied
Methodist Women, where she
served several terms as trea
surer. She was also a member
of the board of directors of the
Morrow County Museum since
its founding in 1958 and was
the secretary of the board at
the time of her death.
Graveside services and
vault interment were held
Monday, May 17, at Heppner
Masonic Cemetery with the
Rev. Michael Sheridan offic
iating. Ron McDonald sang
adappell selections. Casket
bearers were Gene Pierce,
Howard Bryant, Cornett
Green. Dean Gilman, Ed
Dick and Dr. L.D. Tibbies.
Survivors include a son,
Phillip C Smith, of Merritt,
B.C. Canada; a brother, John
Conway of Ashland; three
grandchildren and one great
grandchild. Contributions, for those who
wish, may be made to the
American Cancer Society.
Sweeney Mortuary was in
charge of arrangements.
Jack Davis
GRESHAM - Jack Davis, 73,
a former area resident, died at
Fairlawn Nursing Home,
Gresham. on Wednesday, May
5. 1982.
Mr. Davis was born March
10. 1909 in Kentucky. He came
to Oregon in his late teens,
settling in the Wasco and
Gilliam county area. In
March. 1936, he was married
to Alta Baker at Mason City,
Wash. They later moved from
Wasco to upper Rhea Creek,
where he was employed as a
logger for about 20 years. He
moved from Heppner to Long
Creek in the early 1970's and
then moved to Gresham.
Survivors include two
daughters. Beulah Way, of
Sandy, and Patricia Sawyer,
Conn.: five grandchildren, one
great grandchild, and a broth
er Robert Davis, of Indiana.
His wife, Alta, preceded him
in death in 1958.
Services were held Monday,
May 10. at the Heppner Meth
odist Church, with the Rev.
Michael Sheridan officiating.
Ron McDonald, the soloist,
was accompanied by Carley
Drake at the organ. Casket
bearers were Dale Baker, Ed
ward Baker, Eric Graves,
Mike Craves. Jim Sawyer,
and Kevin Way.
Concluding services and in
terment were at Heppner
Masonic Cemetery.
Sweeney Mortuary was in
charge of arrangements.

er, Nichole Joy, was born to
Paul and Paula Snow of lone
on May 5 at Pioneer Memorial
Hospital, Heppner. She weigh
ed 8 lbs. 8 oz.
Grandparents are Mr. Roy
A. Lindstrom, lone and Janet
Lindstrom, Portland, Mr. and
Mrs. Bill Snow of lone and
Virginia Croff of Crystal Bay,
Nevada.
Great-grandparents are Ed
ris Stuart of Portland, Alva
Schouten, Portland and Har
vey Smith, lone.
James Edward Jewell - A
son, James Edward, was born
May 18 to Arlot and Sandra
Jewell of Kimberly at Pioneer
Memorial Hospital in Hep
pner. He weighed 7 lbs. 9 oz.
Grandparents are Mr. and
Mrs. Samuel Howell, Monu
ment and Mr. and Mrs. Jack
Jewell of Kimberly.
Great-grandparents are Mr.
and Mrs. Arlot Fleming of
Kimberly, Mr. and Mrs. Clif
ford Howell of Monument and
Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Miller of
Kimberly.
Great-great-grandmother is
Mrs. Mable Howell of
Heppner.
Road Report
The Morrow County Public
Works Department has re
leased the following Work Re
port for the week ending May
15:
Roads blaried this past week
were: Emma White. Van
Schoiack. Shobe Sanford. and
Sunflower Flat. Gravel was
spread on the Lena Hisler
Road.
Cold mix patching was done
on the M. Baker Road. Red
ding Road, Balm Fork. Ras
sey Canyon and Brenner Can
yon Road.
New culverts were installed
on Deadman Hill and Board
Creek Road
Curadrails were installed on
the Wagenblast Bridge. This
bridge was completed within
the scheduled time and has
received good response from
the area taxpayers.
PATCH Committee readies for sale

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Breeding announce the engagement and
forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Sally Jo Winters, to
William Ray Maddern of Heppner. He is the son of Betty
Bodell of Lebanon and Russel Maddern of Cherry Valley,
Calif.
A July 10 wedding is planned.

Two Heppner artists were
awarded amateur prizes in

4-H Club meets

The Fancy Frosters 4-H
Club met April 8 and club
members individually recited
the 4-H Pledge.
Birdine Tullis attended the
meeting and gave the group
tips on presentations, what
judges look for and what the
demonstrator should do.
Club leader, Jan Coe, deco
rated a cake for the group. All
club members must give a
demonstration.
On April 15, no meeting was
conducted, but members prac
ticed making decorations in
areas that needed improve

iff's deputy for alleged Fourth
Degree Assault. The warrant
was issued by the Oregon
State Police. Bahadar was
lodged at the Umatilla Police
Department Jail.
Country Striders 4-H
Club meets, plans sale
The Country Striders 4-H
Club met May 4 at the home of
Judy Jepson. club president. A
guest. Sissy Farrell. was
present.
A bake sale and car wash
have been planned by the club
during the month of June.
A Tune-up Horse Show was
discussed by the group and all
members are anxious to par
ticipate in the show, said a
club spokesperson.
