Letters To
J.R.L. Haslem remembrance
To the editor:
The enclosed notice appear
ed in the "Yakima Herald -Republic"
last Saturday,
April 17. (See Obituary col
umn.) Some people in Hep
pner and other Morrow
County communities will re
member J.R.L. Haslem. He
was pastor of the Federated
Church from the summer of
1921 to 1922. Baptists, Presby
terians and Methodists (both
North and South) composed
this fellowship which met in
the present Methodist Church
building.
Haslem 's evangelistic min
istry reached all the com
munities of the Willow Creek
Valley and had a profound
spiritual influence on all of
them. The federation in Hep
pner broke up the year he was
there, but the two Methodist
churches urged Haslem to
continue as their pastor. He
appreciated the invitation but
his loyalties were with the
Baptist churches. Beside that,
the deep wounds he'd suffered
during the breakup necessi
tated his separation from the
battle lone for a while. The
spirit in which the young
preacher bore the misunder
standings and harsh criti
cisms of that stormy period
contributed immeasurably to
ward all of Heppner's church
es being able to survive the set
back with minimum damage.
On Sunday I attended the
funeral, a joyful service of
praise and thanksgiving to
God for a long and fruitful life.
Christine told us that her
Governor's statement true, but .
To the editor:
Today (April 18) is the
beginning of Private Property
Week. Yesterday (April 17) an
article in a newspaper stated
that Gov. Vic Atiyeh has
proclaimed April 18-24 as
Private Property Week in
Oregon. The governor said,
"A cornerstone of American
freedom is the right to private
ownership of real property. It
is here that the individuals
who seek to better themselves
can invest the fruits of their
labors in land, industry,
commercial enterprises or a
home to raise their families."
The governor's statement is
true. What is equally import
ant is what he did not say. In
my opinion the governor has,
in the last four years, done
Why change?
To the editor:
The primary election on
May 18 requires that voters of
Morrow County make a choice
for the office of district
attorney. Which one (candi
date) has the experience in
criminal prosecution? Which
candidate reflects experience
on the record?
Ann Spicer has been an
attorney since 1977. Her op
ponent has been an attorney
since January 1982.
Ann Spicer has been a
professional prosecutor dur
ing her entire legal career.
From 1977 to 1979 she was the
city attorney for Umatilla.
Then, for one full year she was
deputy district attorney for
Morrow Co. Following that,
she was selected by Governor
Victor Atiyeh for the import
ant job of district attorney.
Her opponent worked in a
prosecutor's office as a stu
dent intern for one summer.
Ann Spicer has had three
years experience in prosecut
ing felonies ranging from.
burglary to murder. Her
opponent has never tried a

Following the service. Pas

to his wife, of the Stevens (or
was it Stephens) family who
owned a farm near Heppner.
None of the family are there
now except for the ones buried
in the cemetery. Also, I met
Reid (Boyer) Busick's
daughter who lives in Prosser.
Reid was a brother to Glee and
Dempsey Boyer. He was of the
high school class of 1925, I

which he helped to organize. ,

I do not speak from hearsay.
My rights of personal property
