Cub Scout bake
sale planned
A bake sale will be held
Saturday, April 10, beginning
at 10 a.m. in front of Central
Market. Proceeds from the
sale will help offset Cub Scout
' Day Camp cost for Pack 611,
said a spokesperson. The
camp has been scheduled for
July 12-16 at a cost of $18 per
boy.
Shirley Connor and Karen
Palmer are organizing the
sale, the spokesperson said.
Proceeds will be used by
camp registration by each boy
that participated in the sale,
she added. The location of the
camp will be announced at a
later date.

Millard Vera
Nolan
PENDLETON-Millard
Vern Nolan Sr.. 79, Pendleton,
a former area resident and
lifetime Oregon resident, died
March 28, 1982 at St. Anthony
Hospital in Pendleton.
He was born December 2.
1902 in lone to Walter Eugene
Bud and Ivy Nolan. He
married Irene Peck in Camas,
Wash, on July 3. 1934.
Mr. Nolan was a retired
wheat rancher and was a past
director of the Jordan Elevat
or Co., past director of the
Lexington School Board, a life
member of the Masonic Lodge
No. 69 of Heppner, a member
of the Royal Arch Masons
Chapter 26. Heppner, a mem
ber of Al Kader Shrine
Temple. Portland, a member
of the Scottish Rifle of
Freemasonary. a member of
the First Christian Church.
Heppner, a life member of the
Oregon Wheat Growers
League, a member of the
Morrow County Grain Grow
ers and a life member of the
National Rifle Association.
Mr. Nolan was preceded in
death by two sisters and one
brother.
Survivors include his wife,
Irene of Pendleton: one son.
Millard Vern Nolan Jr. of
Heppner; two daughters: Bev
erly Miles of Clarkston.
Wash.; and Phyllis Bell.
Tacoma, Wash.: one brother.
Col. Elmo D. Nolan of Pass
Christian, Miss.; a sister,
Wilma Simon of Clarkston.
Wash. ; five grandchildren and
one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday. March 31, at the
First Christian Church in
Heppner with the Rev. Don
Shelton officiating. Vocalists
were the Rev. Doug and Karen
Thomas and organist was
Betty Marquardt. Casket
bearers were Cecil Rill, Roger
Campbell, Bob Campbell,
Steve Peck, Lyle Peck and
Cecil Jones. Honorary bearers
were Harold Becket, Gene
Pierce. John Wood, Lonnie
Henderson. Roy Quackenbush
and Bob Jepsen.
Folsom-Bishop Funeral
Chapel was in charge of
arrangements.

McDaniel
BEAVERTON-Bertha Hays
McDaniel, 84 of Beaverton. a
former area resident, died
Tuesday, March 23. 1982. at a
Portland hospital after an
extended illness.
She was born on November
16, 1897, in Boulder. Colorado,
the daughter of William and
Myrtley Bashor Hays. She
received her early education
in Boulder, then moved with
her family to Eastern Oregon
in 1912. She graduated from
Hardman High School. She
then attended Reed College,
where she majored in math
and education. After her
graduation from Reed, she
received a master's degree in
science from Oregon State
University.
On November 7, 1924, she
was married to James Mc
Daniel in Heppner. They
farmed in Morrow County and
Mrs. , McDaniel taught
in Hardman and at Al
pine School. They then
moved to Grant County,
where they farmed at Izee.
Later, they moved to Stayton,
where Mr. McDaniel retired.
Mrs. McDaniel taught high
school for 29 years, including
21 years at Stayton High
School. She retired in 1963. In
1978 she moved to Beaverton,
living there until her death.
Mr. McDaniel preceded her in
death at Stayton, in 1968. Mrs.
McDaniel devoted her spare
time to gardening, especially
enjoying her roses.
Funeral services were held
Friday, March 26, at the First
United Methodist Church in
Beaverton, with the Rev.
Robert Benefiel officiating.
Committal services were at
Restlawn Memory Gardens,
Salem.
She is survived by a sister,
Hazel Bennett of Beaverton
and several nieces and
nephews, including Elvira
Irby and Delsie Craber, both
of Heppner.
Richard J. Fluiz
HEPPNER- Richard J.
Flaiz, 74 of Heppner, died
Monday. March 29. 1982 at a
Veteran's Hospital in Wulla
Walla. Wash.
He was born February 11,
190H in Howard. Kansas to
Arthur and Minnie (Vollmer)
Flaiz. He married Cora A.
Thompson on April 24. 1937 in
Independence. Kansas. The
couple then moved to Nevada
whore Mr. Flaiz entered the
U.S. Navy. Following World
War II they moved to Oregon,
settling in Grant Co.
and later in Kinzua before
moving to Heppner in UHi2.
Funeral services will be
held Thursday, April 1, 2 p.m.
at Sweeney Mortuary Chapel
with the Rev. Richard Bigelow
officiating. Ron McDonald
will be soloist and Karen Stai'k
pianist Casket bearers will be

Mr. Flaiz is survived by his
wife Cora of Heppner; a son,
Richard Flaiz, also of Hep

Kent; Ellsa Mae Gibson,
Heppner; and Sandy (Mrs.
Gordon) Dames, also of
Heppner; a brother, Charles
Flaiz. and three sisters: Nina
Burke. Alice Wells, and Kath
erine Davis, all of Kansas;
and six grandchildren.

on April 2. 1)" in Sherman.

onto a small cattle ranch
located between Cecil and
Morgan. The Crnwells rais
ed Holsteins on their ranch

She was preceded in death
by two daughters and by her
husband, who died in 17.
Services were held Monday,
March 29 at the lone United
Church of Christ with the Rev.
Cathy Barker officiating.
Wilma Cheney was soloist and
Rikka Tews was organist.
Casket bearers were Frank
Crook, Bill Rowell. Gene
Crowell. Edwin Winkelman,
Chauncy Crowell and Rob
ert Crowell Jr. Concluding
services and interment were
at High View Cemetery, lone.
Mrs. Crowell is survived
by two daughters: Delorous
M. Stevens, Wenatchee.
Wash.; and Julia K. Davis of
Puyallup. Wash.; two sons;

of lone; 17 grandchild
ren: 15 great-grandchildren;

held in Pendleton. April 8. 10
a .m. to 5 p.m . at the Pendleton
City Hall conference room.
The workshop will explain
the budgeting process of fire
districts, cemetery districts,
