ment was the theme of a
three-day Young Couples Con
ference recently attended by
Mr. and Mrs. Steve Hill of
Lexington. The conference
was held at Inn of the Seventh
Mount in Bend. It focused on
cooperative principles, re
sponsibilities of co-op board
members, managers, and
member development. The
young couples participated in
discussions relating to the
co-ops' financial needs, the
role of the farm organizations,

These words began the Coven
ant signed by eleven youth and
two advisors at the beginning
of the lone United Church of
Christ Jr. High Youth Fellow
ship llungorlhon. stated the
Rev. Cathy Barker. All of the
pnrticipntnts completed the
24 -hour fast, earning over $350
from pledges. The entire
amount will he sent to the
Hunger Action Fund of the
United Church of Christ, to be
used for resources for agricul
ture, policy change, and
emergency food aid both here
in our own country and
abroad, continued Barker.
During their time together,
the youth involved viewed two
filmstrips on hunger and
discussed their learnings.
Each kept a diary of how they
were feeling and what they
were learning from the exper
ience and from the various
activities of the day. The
group made a montage of
pictures and words from
magazines to illustrate the
problem of world hunger and
some of the solutions. "There
aren't any easy answers to
these problems!" said one
youth.
At 9 a.m. Sunday morning,
the designated end of the fast,
most of the hungry young
people felt fine and eagerly
ale the breakfast prepared by
Gene and Maxine Riettnann.

and weak, and found it hard to
eat. The group discussed how
terrible it would te to go
without food indefinitely.
"Everyone needs food!" ex
claimed Tina Wilson of lone.

were impressed by the com
mittment of the young people,
and by the meaningful
thoughts they shared. Barker
said "We've learned that we

on the association's board of
directors were Richard Wilk
inson of lleppner and Robert

lleppner, Bill Etter. Pilot
Rock, and Donald Hawkins of
Pendleton
and shared ideas about their
local co-ops, stated a CENEX
spokesperson .
Noel Estensom, senior vice
president of Finance and
Petroleum, CENEX, St. Paul,
Minn, was the guest speaker
at the banquet . The confer
ence was sponsored by
CENEX, Ore. -Wash. Farmers
Union, and the Ore. State
Grange and American Insti
tute of Cooperation.
CENEX is a regional supply
cooperative supplying 1,500
cooperatives in thirteen
states. .

Upon the question of levying a
lax for the purpose of funding
the school district budget.
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN
THAT an election will be held
March 30. 19R2 between the
hours oT 8:00 a m. and 8:00
p.m. The purpose of the
election is to submit a tax levy
to the voters for the purpose of
funding the school district
operating budget for the
I982-K3 school year.
If this measure is approved
$3,740,364 of the taxes levied in
the 1982-83 fiscal year are
eligible for partial state fund
ing. However. $615,226 of the
taxes will lie totally funded by
the local taxpayers without
any partial stale payment.
The purpose of the entire
amounts to be voted upon is to
provide funds for mainten
ance and operation of the
school district which cannot
be provided within the dis
trict's tax base of $661,249.
The total levy will result in an
estimated lax rate of $7.96 per
$I.IKM of true cash value,
exclusive of the tax for tmnded
indebtedness.

The purpose of this levy is to
provide funds to balance the
Morrow County operating
budget and the Morrow
County Hospital and Clinic
budgets for 1982-83. The Mor
row Count v tax base for
1982-83 will he $413,473. This
levy with anticipated receipts
from all sources, will not
finance expenditures for Gen
eral Fund. Roads. General
School Funds. Cities portion of
Road Funds and operation of
the Hospital and North Mor
row County Clinic. Increases
are due to inflation, existing
labor contracts tied to cost of
living and certain changes in
hospital operations, plus 8
percent for uncollected taxes.
The total levy will be
$3,238,773. If this measure is
approved. $2,583,056 of the
taxes levied in the 1982-83
fiscal year are eligible for
partial State funding. How
ever. $655,717 of the taxes
levied will be totally financed
