Jump Rope
for Heart
Students of the lone Schools
will be competing for prizes in
the Jump Rope For Heart
special event, March IB, 1982
from 1 4 p.m. The event,
sponsored by Oregon Alliance
for Health, Physical Educa
tion, Recreation and Dance,
will benefit the American
Heart Association, Oregon
Affiliate, said an association
spokesperson.
This marks the third year of
involvement for the American
Alliance for Health, Physical
Education, Recreation and
Dance.
' Jump Rope for Heart Is a
special event conducted by
school physical education
teachers and students who
organize the rope-jumping
competition. The six-student
teams jump rope for a
maximum of three hours.
Pledges collected from spon
sors of their rope-Jumping
efforts contribute to Oregon
Affiliate programs in re
search, education and com
munity service.
Coordinators of the Jump
Rope For Heart note that the
event is a public awareness
vehicle for promoting cardio
vascular fitness and public
school physical education pro
grams. The emphasis in
physical education is a public
awareness vehicle for promo
ting, cardiovascular fitness
and public school physical ed
ucation programs. The em
phasis in physical education is
now on lifetime sports and
physical activities which are
more concerned with encour
aging general participation
rather than competition.
They are following a new
physical education concept,
which places more emphasis
on an individual commitment
toward health, while still
maintaining the traditional
elements of fun. team sports,
and formalized activities. The
importance of both healthy
bodies and sharp minds is
being taught. This is all a
part of a concern that young
people learn early in life about
rope jumping, which is an
excellent exercise for helping
to improve the cardiovascular
system and general physical
fitness. Minimum equipment
is required All that is needed
is a good pair of shoes, a rope
and a small space to jump.
And it's good for persons of all
ages, at ny time of day.
indoors or outdoors, he said.
