'Catch a Wildlife
Thief program
launched in Ore.
A program called "Cut eh A
Wildlife Thief or CAWT has
been launched by Oregon
Kiwanis Clubs, the Depart
ment of Fish and Wildlife and
the Oregon State Police.
Essentially the program is an
effort to increase public
awareness of poaching and the
problems it causes, said a
news release from the De
partment of Fish and Wildlife.
As part of the program,
stickers bearing the hotline
number. 1-800-452-7888. have
been produced, intended to be
attached near a telephone. CB
radio, on a tackle box or in any
other convenient location so as
to lie handy when needed,
continued the news release. In
addition, a wall poster re
minding citizens of the pro
gram is available for posting
in businesses, offices, schools
and other visible locations.
Kiwanis clubs in many parts
of the slate are distributing
Campsite reservations
now being taken
Summer campsites in 13
Oregon State Parks may be
reserved beginning Monday,
January 11. according to Steve
Johansen, state parks opera
tion planner.
Johansen said that sites
may be reserved from Mem
orial Day weekend in late May
through Labor Day weekend
in early September.
Reservations may be made
in writing or in person at the
desired park between January
11 and September 5, although
reservations in writing are
suggested because of the
possibility of offices at some
parks not being staffed during
off season months.
The 13 campsite reservation
parks include:
Beachside, Beaverly Beach
and South Beach, all near
Newport; Cape Lookout
Tillamook; Detroit Lake
Detroit, Devil s Lake Lin
coln City; Fort Stevens
Hammond; Harris Beach
Brookings; Honeyman
Florence ; Prinevilie Reser
voir Prineville; Sunset Bay
Coos Bay; The Cove
Palisades Culver; and
Wallowa Lake Joseph.
Johansen said all proce
dures and fees for making
reservations will be the same
as last year. Each reservation
application requires a $7
advance deposit, which in
cludes a $2 nonrefundable
service charge and $5 applied
toward the first night's camp
ing fees, reservations cannot
be made for more than 10 days
in any 14 consecutive day
period, he said. Telephone
reservations cannot be ac
cepted. Campsite reservation appli
cation forms are available at
many Chamber of Commerce,
Division of Motor Vehicle, and
Oregon State Police offices.
They are also available at the
State Parks office in Salem, at
525 Trade Street SE, 97310;
and at State Park Regional
offices in Portland, Tillamook,
Coos Bay, Bend and La
Grande. Those who are unable to
obtain a reservation form may

these materials. Slickers are
also available through offices
of the Stale Police find the
Department of Fish and
Wildlife, Poslers can be

ment's regional offices or the
headquarters office in Port
land. In Ihe meantime, sportsmen
who have not yet run across a
hotline slicker are encouraged
to jot down the number on a
slip of paper and include it
with (heir hunting and fishing
license so it will be handy if
needed.
Although Oregon has one of
the most effective fish and

release.
ate park, with the $7 deposit.
The letter should include
name, address and phone
number of each party re
questing a reservation, num
ber of people in the party; first
and last day of reservation
period desired; length and-or
size and type of camping
equipment; type of site desir
ed and whether an alternative
type of site is acceptable.
Johansen pointed out that in
addition to about 3.500 camp
sites at the 13 reservation
slate parks, there are some
2.100 sites at 39 other parks
which are available on a
first -come, first -served basis.
Campsites at the 13 reser
vation parks which haven't
been reserved on any particu
lar day, or for which cancella
tions have been received, will
also be available on a first
come, first -served approach
In addition, special group
facility reservations at Silver
Falls Slate Park. 26 miles east
of Salem, may be made for the
entire year of 19H2 beginning
on Monday. January 4.
