The number one position in
the East Division of the
Columbia Basin Conference
was on the line Saturday,
when the Heppner Mustangs
clashed with the also unde
feated Pilot Rock Rockets.
It took some clutch shooting,
a superb second half effort by
Dorian Forrar and two over
times, but Heppner came
away from the contest a 59 - 56
winner to remain undefeated
and on top of the stack in the
conference.
Heppner got off to a slow
start in the contest, falling
behind eight to 16 in the first
quarter. "They came out and
jumped on us right off the
bat." said Brent Eggers.
Mustang assistant coach.
Kurt Stelk. the Rockets
stand-out 6 ft. 3 inch center,
provided most of the scoring
in the first quarter which put
the Mustangs behind.
Heppner reserve Mike Cur
rin came off the bench,
however, to help shut down the
big man.
"Mike did a really good job
on him in the second quarter."
said Eggers. "He held him to
only seven points."
The Mustangs outscored the
' Rockets 14 to seven in the
second quarter to come within
one point at the half.
Heppner came out of the
locker room for the second
quarter, but couldn't get its
offense untracked. falling be
hind 33 to 39 by the end of the
third quarter.
The fourth quarter proved to
be the game winner, however,
when Heppner's high-scoring
forward Dorian Forrar got the
hot hand and dumped in 14
points in that period, including
a basket with 10 seconds left to
send the game into its first
overtime tied at 52 - 52.
With 10 seconds left in the
first overtime Dale Holland
put in a 20-footer to knot the
Pirates tougher 2nd time around,
but Mustangs remain undefeated
Riverside proved to be a
tougher opponent in its second
contest with the undefeated
Heppner Mustangs last Fri
day, but not quite good enough
as Heppner thumped the
Pirates for the second time
this season. 67 - 59.
Riverside jumped out to a
quick 14-8 lead on the
Mustangs. showing they
weren't the same club the
Mustangs had clobbered 73 - 39
earlier.
But the Pirates couldn't
maintain the lead as Heppner
came roaring back in the
second quarter to outscore

The Cardinal Jr. High boys
faced the Echo Cougars on
January 7. The Cardinals
were defeated 23 - 34.
The Cardinals were out
scored 5 - 11 in the first
quarter and were held to two
points in the second quarter.
The Cougars took a 7 -17 lead
at the half.
In the third quarter the
cougars moved their lead to 17
points as the score showed the

Heppner's Don Lott turned
in an exceptional performance
in this, the opening game of
league play for both clubs,
scoring 21 points including a
string of eight free throws in
the final quarter. He was high
scorer for both clubs.
"Don Lott really played a
good game," said Brett
Eggers. assistant coach. "He
made 13 of 15 from the free
throw line."
Eggers said Dorian Forrar
also had a good game, scoring
19 points and Robert Bier

The Cardinals held,, the
Cougars to seven points in the
final quarter as the Cardinals
scored 12 points.
The Cardinals had three
players score six points each:
Kevin Ball, Christopher Rea

The Cardinals were held to
two points in the second
quarter as the Eagles went on
to take a 7 - 22 half time lead.
The Eagles came out burn
ing for the third quarter as
they opened up the score 12-36
to start the final quarter.

Tammy Holtz scored five

at the end of the quarter.
The Cardinals came back in
the second quarter to close the
gap to three at the half as
Michelle La Rue scored six
points in the quarter. The
Cardinals went to the locker
room at the half with a 18 - 21
disadvantage.
The Cardinals were shut out
in the third quarter as the
Grizzlies went on to take a 18 -33
