national free throw shooting
contest for youngsters age

held at Heppner and lone on
December 12 from 9 to 11 a.m.
Almost three million young
sters from throughout the
country entered last year's
competition for boys and girls
in age categories 8-9. 10-11 and
12-13. Each contestant has 25
shots at the hoop. Theboyand
girl in each age group with the
best scores will advance
through four tiers of competi
tion to qualify for the national
finals at Market Square Arena
in Indianapolis, said a spokes
person. IiOcal winners will compete
against other contestants in
the district event at Herrnis
ton. January 9. Names of the"
national winners will he in
scribed on the Flks National
"Hoop Shoot" plaque, on
.permanent display in the
Naismith Memorial Basket
ball Hall of Fame in Spring
field, Massachusetts. Winners
also receive trophies.
The program began as a
local Flks Activity for young
hoys in Corvallis in 194fi.
Within 12 years, support for
I he event had grown enough
for the Flks Oregon State
Association to take it to the
slate level. And in 1972. the
"Flks Hoop Shoot" was ex
panded to include contestants
from 19 states. By 1974. girls
were added to the competi
tion, and the program has
continued to grow ever since,

Winners advance through
four tiers of cnmpetitinn--the
local, district, slate and re
gional semi-finals-until only
3fi hovs and 3fi girls remain.
From this final group, one
hov and one girl emerge as
national champions in each
category.
Families of finalists on the
stale, regional and national
levels attend the competition
as guests of the Elks, and are
encouraged to play an active
part throughout the contesL
One girl from LaGrande has
gone to the national finals two
times, winning all the marbles
one venr and she came in
second the nest year. It is
possible for anyone to win, the
spokesperson said.

This is Swanson"s seventh
year to help with the annual
Elks' Hoop Shoot. When Jim
, was in the seventh grade he
was a winner in the hoop shoot
coolest, he went on to finish
fourth at the state competition
at OSP in Corvallis.
Dale Holland will be in
charge of the Heppner competition.

The dinner traditionally
features a turkey and dressing
menu, complete with pumpkin
pie. Donations from residents
Plans are currently being
developed for the eleventh
annual Christmas Eve dinner
sponsored hv the students at
Blue Mountain Community
College, it was staled in a
recent news release.
