Mustangs
By ANNE MURRAY
The Heppner Mustangs
couldn't quite get their magic
touch working when they
needed it most. Saturday,
Nov. 21, the Mustangs took on
the Warriors from Oakridge
for a state "A" playoff
advancement into the semifin
als. The Warriors turned the
Mustangs back from advanc
ing by defeating them 26 21.
When Cliff Dougherty re
turned the opening kickoff 78
yards for 6 points, the Mus
tangs were on top of the world.
Even though the Warriors
dominated the Mustangs on
the statistition's paper, the
Mustangs conceded nothing
to them on the field.
The Mustangs proved that
by stopping the Warriors on
the Mustang's one foot line
and also on the three-yard
line.
The Warriors came back in
the third quarter to go ahead
of the Mustangs with a one
yard run in by Kurt Carver.
Then the Mustangs decided
that they wanted to put an end
to the squabble of who's going
to win. Doug Holland lunged
into the endzone from one
yard out to put the Mustangs
on top 14-7.
Not to be shown up, the
Warriors pushed Michael 10
yards into the endzone, thus
. tying the score at 14 -14 by the
end of the third quarter.
The Mustangs weren't quite
satisfied with the score, so
proved John Murray, who
rambled 14 yards into the
endzone.
Oakridge, not to be outdone,
came right back with a one
yard ran by Larry Boyd.
The Warriors held the
Mustangs on their next pos
session thus forcing them to
punt.
The Warriors advanced 74
yards in 12 plays to score the
winning touchdown with one
minute, 30 seconds left in the
game.
"It was the finest high
school football game I've ever
been associated with . The only
thing wrong was the final
score. Heppner certainly has
nothing to be ashamed of,"

A majority of elk hunters do

The questionnaire was sent
shortly after the Fish and
Wildlife Commission announ
ced lis intent to look seriously
at a system of limited entry to
control elk hunter numbers,
although enthusiasm for a
limited entry system and
"duality" elk hunting has
been expressed more oflen in
recent years at public hear
ings, this often does not
express the views of the
ma iot ity since It is usually the
most dedicated or enthusiastic
hunters who attend.
The questionnaire asked the
hunter to check one of three
proposals he would prefer or
to provide one of his own. The
opiums listed were:
1. A two hunt period hull elk
season as allowed during the
1981 season, with hunter
numbers limited in only four
units.
2. A two hunt period bull
season with hunter numbers
limiled statewide by unit
during the first period hunt
hut numbers during the Mrs!
period hunt but no limit on '
hunter numbers during the I
second period
3. A one period hull elk '
season with hunter numbers
limited statewide by unit.
4 Other.
Of the 3. 47 responses re
, ceived, 3!) percent selected the
system currently in use, 24
ercenl preferred a two criod '
hunt with limited entry on the
'first period only, and 22
percent favored a one period
statewide limited entry hunt.
The remaining 15 percent
' listed numerous comments
under the category of "other."
