Last weekend a couple of homesick "Bostonians" found
little bit of New England in eastern Washington.
" The air was warm and the sun held an autumn glow which
reflected off the giant yellow maple leaves that had just
fallen tojhe ground. Larry and I were In Walla Walla,
Washington.
Pioneer Park was in lime green turning to lemon. The
Maple trees were everywhere; their leaves spread out to
coat a thinning lawn.
Someone had futility raked, leaving what looked like lumps
in a golden carpet. We happily plowed into the piles,
crunching the dried leaves and enjoying the almost forgotten
sound they made
Tor ' Just a few short hours I imagined myself in the small
community of Montpelier, Vermont. But then we entered the
campus of Whitman College housing generations of
undergrads, and I felt as if we were standing to the midst of
Harvard. Radcliff, and Tufts all rolled into one.
Walking, I saw Ivy growing ancient over old brick. Across a
well-used ballfield which sat in the hub of the campus, rose
the gray-atone hall of music with immense pillars to hold it
up. And everywherelKere were tfeMlTfind gnarled, that
someone's grandfather or even great-grandfather probably
still remembers from his time as a student.
There was an aura of quiet wisdom, which often comes
with age, surrounding the area of Whitman College and
Pioneer Park. I felt it in the Maple trees and even in the
grand old homes which bordered theneighborhqod.
Somehow a little bit of New England found its way" out of
Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts and formed
an oasis of colonial civilization in the middle of the dry
farmlands of eastern Washington.
