LETTERS
Dear fathers:
To the Editor:
This letter should perhaps
be addressed to fathers of
aspiring hunters: Are you
training your sons to perfect
their aim by target practice
before yielding to the impulse
to shoot at living creatures?
And do you insist that they
shoot only to kill-not to wound
an animal? There is plenty of
evidence around town of
irresponsible shooting-both
with guns and with bows and
arrows. Yes, guns have been
shot in town. We find birds
with bullet holes, robins we
have fed through the winter
only to have them shot by
some trigger-happy young
hunter, an occasional phea
sant, and others, even some
pets.
This morning I was helping
pick my neighbor's apples
when I heard the cries of a cat
in pain. Following the sound, I
discovered a half -grown kitten
with an arrow through the
flesh of its shoulder, great torn
places where it had tried to get
into some kind of comfortable
position but that long arrow
hitting the walls of its hiding

I II IS Band to sell
Xmas candles
BY MARY ANN CERULLO
The Heppner High School
Band has begun taking orders,
door-to-door, for ornamental
Christmas candles this week,
announced Band Director,
Jim Ackley.
The candles would be nice
as Christmas gifts or to use as
decorations, said Ackley.
Payment for an order will
not be expected until the
candles are delivered, he said.
Proceeds from the candle
sale will go toward homecom-ing-halftime
expenses, band
equipment, and future activi
ties. The HHS Band is currently
organizing a talent show,
tentatively set for Dec. 1 at the
high school cafetorium, and
plans for two Christmas
programs are underway.

TO EDITOR
place tearing holes in the soft
body. I wish the boy who shot
that arrow (I say boy because
I can't believe a grown man
would shoot so irresponsibly )
' I wish he could have seen-and
heard-that poor kitten. I
believe he would be more
careful in the future if he could
see firsthand the suffering
caused by his careless sport.
I want to express apprecia
tion to our local police chief,
who responded promptly and
compassionately to our call
for help. What he had to do
was not pleasant, but under
the circumstances there was
no choice.
Please, boys with arrows or
guns, before you shoot, (1) be
sure you can kill the creature
you are aiming at and (2) be
sure you want to kill it. It is
easy to take life, you know, but
you can't give it back. One
more thing; before shooting
at anything, ask yourself,"If
this was my pet. how would I
feel at finding him suffering or
dead?"
Sincerely,
Joyce Grasser
