PUBLIC NOTICES (
By ANNE MURRAY
The Heppner Mustangs ad
ded another victory to their
list as they trampled the Pilot
Rock Rockets 43-0, Friday
night, Oct. 23, at Heppner.
The Mustangs' victory put
the finishing touches on Home
coming week.
The Mustangs' defense
made it possible for Earl
Hammond to score the first
two Mustang touchdowns. The
first touchdown came from six
yards out. Then Hammond
came back with a five yard
scramble to the endzone, this
put the Mustangs on top 14-0 at
the end of the first quarter.
The Rockets offense had a
hard time getting started
against the Mustangs' de
fense. Whenever the Rockets
could get something generat
ed, the Mustangs would end up
with the ball, either by fumble
or interception. The Mustangs
proved this point by intercept
ing five passes and recovering
five fumbles.
During the second quarter,
Hammond handed the spot
light over to senior tailback
John Murray, who then pro
ceeded to score three touch
downs. The first of which was
from 25 yards out. Murray
then followed up with a 58 yard
jaunt to the endzone.
Murray then took a break
from the scoring action, as
Mike Currin came into the
scene, but Currin did his thing
on defense. Currin trapped
Rick Martinez in the endzone
for a safety and two points.
Murray then came back to
finish the work. This time
Murray scored on a three yard
dash into the endzone. By the
end of the third quarter the
Mustangs were leading the
Rockets 35-0.
The Mustangs weren't quite
finished scoring as was proved
by freshman, back-up, quart
erback Todd Miller. Miller
dove one yard into the endzone
Jeff On then ran into the
endzone for the two point
conversion.
The Mustangs were led in
rushing by Murray who had
162 yards on 13 carries.
Hammond carried nine
times for 53 yards, sophomore
Sid Kennedy rushed 33 yards
on five carries.
Currin led the Mustangs'
defense with 14 points, accord
ing to the Heppner coaches
defensive rating system. Lee
Rice followed close behind
with 13 points. Bruce Way was
also in double digits with 10
points.
Coach John Sporseen com
