Mustangs heat Trojans,
ranked third in state
The Itoppner MuhUums once
again proved why they were
ranked No, three in the state,
at the Mustangs stepped over
the Lylc-Klickltat Trojans,
27-6, Frt., Oct. 16.
Although the score showed a
handy win for the Mustangs,
the Trojans gave them a run
for their money.
Coach John Sporseen com
mented after the game, "Lyle
was an extremely tough team
one of the toughest we've
faced this year."
The first half was a defen
sive battle except for occas
sional breaks for scoring such
as Cliff Dougherty's touch
down catch of 12 yards from
quarterback Doug Holland.
Dougherty's touchdown put
the Mustangs on top 7-0 at the
end of the first half.
Holland came out firing the
ball during the second half as
he hit John Murray for an 89
yard touchdown toss. Holland
also ran two yards for a
touchdown.
During the fourth quarter,
Earl Hammond contributed
hia six points to the Mustangs'
acoring drive.

The Heppner Mustangs took
their plans for a state playoff
berth one step further by
defeating the Wasco County
Bedsides 33-6, Friday night
Oct. 9 at Maupin.
Though the score was all for
Heppner, The Mustangs were
plaqued by penalties.
Coach John Sporseen com
mented after the game. "We
have to stop getting unneces
sary penalties. The game
should have been over by the
first half."
The Mustangs had 155 yards
in penalties compared to the
Redsides 55 yards. Penalties
made the difference in several
cases. In the second quarter,

The Cardinals started off
scoring 2n points before they
had run one offensive play.
Jeff Hams received the open
ing kickoff and ran it back 89
yards for a touehdawn. The
pass for the extra points
failed.
On the Falcons first posses
sion of the ball Jeff Hams
intercepted a Falcon pass and
ran 37 yards for a touchdown.
Howard Leavitt ran in for the
extra points.
Jeff Hams remained a
threat to the Falcons as he
again intercepted a Falcon
pass and ran it bark 70 yards
for a touchdown. The pass for
the extra points failed. The
score at the end of the quarter
showed lone on top 20-0.
The Falcons scored their
first touchdown of the game on
a 42 yard pass to Rill
Maclnnes from quartcrbark
.Scott Asher. The run for the
extra points failed.

a pass play with the same
combination from 31 yards
out. Asher ran in for the extra
points to make the score 20-14.
lone's fourth touchdown
came on a 71 yard run by a
sophomore Howard Leavitt.

again intercepted by Jeff
Hams as he sprinted 36 yards
for his fourth touchdown of the
game. The pass for the extra
points was no good.
Falcon quarterbacck Scott
closer to
Lee Rice intercepted a pass
and ran it back to the one yard
line, but unfortunately it was
called back by a clipping
penalty. John Murray also had
a similar experience, in which
his touchdown was nulified by
a personal foul in the third
quarter.
Neither of the two teams
could generate much offense
until late in the second
quarter, when Mustang run
ning back Earl Hammond
rambled into the endzone from
11 yards out.
The Mustangs came alive
during the third quarter when
quarterback Doug Holland
connected with Robert Bier
for a nine yard touchdown.
Murray then proceeded 10
yards for another touchdown.
Holland and Bier connected
once again, this time for 27
yards and six points.
The Redsides finally got
something going in the third
quarter with a two yard
plunge into the endzone.
The Mustangs put one more
touchdown on the board before
the end of the game. Ham
mond struck once again with a
one yard plunge, this upped
the score to 33-6.
Murray led the Mustangs in
rushing with 134 yards in 22
carries. Hammond followed
close behind with 82 yards in
13 carries and Holland had
nine carries for 52 yards.
Holland completed four out
of eight passes for 83 yards
and two touchdowns. Jeff Orr
completed a pass on an extra
point conversion.
Rice led the defensive
department with 14 points,
followed by Murray with 12.

Starr hit Tim Patton with a 25
yard touchdown pass. The run

Wimer scored the next, touch
down for the Falcons on a 78
yard kickoff return, to make
the score 52-44.
The Cardinals next touch
down came when Tim Patton
ran the kickoff back 60 yards
for a touchdown. The run for
the .!ra points failed.
The Falcon's came back to
score on a 58 yard pass to
Maclnnes. Asher ran in for the
extra points. Jeff Hams' last
touchdown of the game came
on a 70 yard kickoff return to
end the third quarter 64-52.
The Cardinals wasted no
time in the third quarter as
Starr hit Craig Hams with a 36
yard touchdown pass. Jeff
Hams ran in for the extra
points.
Hubbell scored next for the
Falcons on a seven yard run.
On lone's next possession of
the ball Craig Hams pushed
through from one yard out to

game as they downed the
Mustangs 15-0. The Cardinals
high scorer was Lori Fetsch
with eight points. Cindy Hill
scored four points and Mar
garet Doherty scored three for
the Cards.
