"Nourish Your Neurons", is
the theme of this year's
National School Lunch Week,
October It through 17. The
1981-82 school year marks the
35th anniversary of the Na
tional School Lunch Program
which now serves some 26
million children in about 95
thousand schools, reports Tino
Serrano of the U.S. Depart
ment of Agriculture Food and
Nutrition Service. ;
Heppner Elementary and
High Schools will Join with
other schools across the nation
on Wednesday, Oct. 14 in "
serving a menu of turkey on a
roll, crispy potatoes, chilled
mixed fruit, a cookie and milk.

The Cardiac Cardinals did It
again last Friday. This lime
the cardinals rallied
in the fourth quarter
with a long drive in a
down-pour to score with five
minutes to go. This gave the
Cardinals an IB-lfi victory
over the Cascade Locks
Pirates
The Cardinals drew first
blood in the first quarter as
Howard Leavitt scrambled in
from four yards out. The pass
for the extra points failed.
Cascade Locks came back
to score on a 17 yard break by
Brad Midduugh. The Pirates
were called for offsides when
they lined up for the extra
points so they were backed up
to the eight yard line. Victor
Bilycu hit Eddy Tornow for
the extra points despite the
five yard penalty. This put the
Pirates ahead 8-6 at the end of
the first quarter.
The Cardinals opened up the
second quarter when Jeff
Hams scrambled 46 yards for
a touchdown on the first play
of the quarter. The pass for
the extra points failed, this put
the Cards ahead 12-8.
The Pirates came roaring
back for their last score In the
game on a 64 yard touchdown
pass to Eddy Tornow from
Victor Bilyeu. The extra
points were good with the
same combination scoring, to
end the first half with the
Cardinals down 12-16.
As the Cardinals came out
for the second half, the rain
and hail began to fall. The
third quarter turned into a
defensive battles as both
teams were held off the
scoreboard in the quarter.
The Cardinals held the Pirates
to four vards in the quarter as
they sacked the quarterback
five times.
The Cardinals were still
down 12-16 at the beginning of
the final quarter. With five
minutes left in the game,
Cardinal quarterback Denny
Starr broke out of the pack for
an eight yard touchdown. The
pass for the extra points
failed. The Cardinals held the
Pirates for the last minutes of
the game to take a 18-16
comeback victory.
Leading the Cardinals in the
rushing department was Jeff
Hams with 196 yards on 30
carries. Howard Leavitt car
ried the ball 31 yards on eight
carries and Denny Starr had
23 yards on five carries.
Leading rusher for Cascade
Locks was Brad Middaugh
with 17 yards on one carry.
The Cardinals held the Pirates
to minus 40 yards in rushing.
The Cards had 254 yards in
rushing.
In the passing department
Denny Starr hit two out of 12
for 48 yards and was intercept
ed four times. Victor Bilyeu
completed nine out of 27 for
135 yards and two intercep
tions. The Cardinals had
trouble with the slippery
pigskin as they fumbled the
ball nine times and lost it
three times.
Jeff Hams and Mark Mey
ers each had an interception in
the fourth quarter for the
Cardinals.

top-ranked Arlington Honkers
at 7:30 p.m. on the Cardinals
own field October 8.
