F.IWIT-The Heppner OaieUe-Times. Heppner. Oregon. Thursday. October 8. HWI
PJ. Livestock
Exposition to
offer many
activities
Some of the Pacific North
west's best beef, pork and
mutton on the hoof will be on
public auction October 13
when the 4-H-FFA Blue Rib
bon Livestock Sale is held at
the Pacific International Live
stock Exposition in Portland.
Exposition dates are October
10 through 17.
The auction offers a chance
for the public to purchase a
prize-winning market animal
and support the FFA .md 4-H
Club agricultural programs at
the same time, according to
Greg Look, Arena Activities
Manager for the Exposition.
The top two animals in each
class in the FFA and 4-H.
divisions of the exposition will
be sold at the Blue Ribbon
Auction, Look said. All are top
quality market animals.
About 125 animals in all will be
sold.
Purchasers may take the
animals with them, assign
them to a firm for butchering
and packaging, or sell them at
a pre-arranged support price
to a major packing company.
The support price is set by
agreement between the P.I.
and the packing company.
Look said.
The auction is a great
opportunity for friends or
supporters of the 4-H and FFA
programs to support the
individual members, Look
said. The funds received from
the sale helps the students to '
finance future projects. The
higher the bid, the more
help for the seller.
Bidders need not keep the
animals, Look said. The
packing company will take
any animals at a pre-arranged
support price. If the bid price
is higher, the bidder need pay
only the difference between
the bid and support prices.
"It can be looked at as a
donation to the student, or as a
form of advertising," Look
pointed out. "The bidder gets
some publicity and at the
same time supports a quality
youth program," he contin
ued. The Blue Ribbon Auction
will be held at 6 p.m. on
Tuesday, October 13. after
completion of the 4-H and FFA
showing and judging events.
The auction is one of five
sales at the P.I. this year. The
Oregon Angus Sale is at 3
p.m., October 11. The North
west Pinzgauer Sale is at 7
p.m., October 12. Two sales
are scheduled for October 18 -the
Oregon - Washington
Simmental Sale at 2:30 p.m.
and the Pride of the Northwest
All Breeds Sheep Sale at 3
p.m. All cattle sales are in the
Sales Tent. The sheep sale is
in the Sheep Show tent.
While the Blue Ribbon
Auction is for market animals,
the other sales are for
breeding animals. Look said.
A wide variety of activities
will be going on at the
Exposition, in addition to the
animal showing and sales,
Look noted. There will be
daily horse show and rodeo
perfcrmances, sheep dog
trials, the Great Northwest
Chili Cook-off, country-western
bands, a country-western
dance contest, a pancake
breakfast, a chuckwagon
breakfast and an old-fashioned
Christian rally.
Admission to the P.I. is $3
for adults, $1 for children six
through 12. Children under six
are admitted free and senior
citizens will be admitted free
on weekday afternoons from 1
to 5. Children six through 12
will be admitted free with a
Quick Draw Charlie coloring
cartoon If they are accompan
ied by a full paid adult
admission.
The doors open at 11 a.m.
Saturday and Sunday, and 1
p.m. Monday through Friday.
The Exposition closes at 11
p.m. nightly.
