Last week Mary Ann Cerullo wrote a "Festival Review"
about the Ashland plays which I had intended to present this
week. I agree with what she said, but because this year's
Heppner High School Shakespearean field trip included
attendance at five plays, one of which the Cerullos did not
see, I want to report more about the festival.
This was Jane Rawlin's 13th field trip to Ashland with
Heppner students. Because Carleena Rathbun withdrew
from the group, I was suddenly invited to fill in her place.
Now I have attended the plays five times, three of which were
with Rawlins-led groups.
This year two attractive senior girls, Polly Fortenberry
and Lisa Nix, and two fine junior boys, Wes Marlatt and
Glenn Smith, really enjoyed their first experience of
professional theater. Each of the four has appeared in high
school dramas here and thus has somewhat of an
understanding of some of the work and problems involved in
stage productions. Each really took a serious interest in all
that Ashland offers - the Shakespearean plays in the outdoor
Elizabethian Theater, the performances in the great, modern
Angus Bowmer Playhouse, the Backstage Tour, the Tudor
Guild Museum, the noon talk in Lithia Park, shopping and
looking about in Ashland and in nearby historic Jacksonville
and living in the dormitory and eating in the dining room at
Southern Oregon College.
Lisa and Polly attracted considerable attention from the
large group of wrestlers attending a summer camp on the
campus. Jane and I enjoyed the assortment of printed
T-shirts the youth wore. Several shirts proclaimed "I am
going to go to heaven 'cuz I've already been to hell - Iowa
Intensive Wrestling Camp." No one from Heppner became
addicted to the famed Lithia Water although Wes Marlatt
brought home a nicely labeled bottle of it for his family to
sample.
The Heppner group saw "Two Gentlemen of Verona,"
"Twelfth Night," "Henry IV, Part One" and "Wild Oats"
which the Cerullos had enjoyed. Of these four all enjoyed the
excellent, action-filled, historic chronicle the most. The four
students had seats almost on the stage, in the first and second
rows, for this one. When Henry, Prince of Wales, (Dennis
Smith ) tost a button from his jacket, Lisa was able to retrieve
it for a treasured souvenir.
Fortunately Mrs. Rawlins was able to get six tickets for
"Othello" which was staged in the beautiful Bowmer Theater
as was "Wild Oats," the comedy spoof on Shakespearean
drama. "Othello" was most outstanding and impressed us
especially because we had an intimate, relaxed, informal
visit with its super Desdemona (Joyce Harris) at a lunchtime
talk in Lithia Park. Ms. Harris, an Actors Equity Association
member, told her intent listeners about her background,
about her careful study for the role of Desdemona and
skillfully and graciously answered a wide variety of
questions. She was a speech major at SOCE some years back
who married one of the Shakespearean Company actors
, before she took up performing. She has studied with various
' theatrical schools in California and in New York where she
had special classes under Una Merkel Haugen who played
Desdemona to Paul Robeson's outstanding Othello during the
middle 1940's which had the longest run of any
Shakespearean performance, according to Mary Heinlein's
article on Robeson in World Book. Jane Rawlins was
teaching at lone at the time and was able to take several
students from there to Portland's Mayfair Theater to see this
long-remembered, classic performance.
The Ashland production of "Othello" opened on Aug. 2,
1981, and will be continued next spring. The title role was
forcefully portrayed by James Avery. The tremendous
villian, Iago, was played by Denis Arndt, who was also
outstanding as Rover in "Wild Oats."
An unscheduled crisis, when the school district car broke
down about noon on Highway 97 just south of La Pine, gave
we six a too-prolonged look at the community where, quite
fortunately, the needed replacement parts and the
mechanical help was available to get us along our way home,
albeit about five hours behind schedule. Jane and I had a
short visit with Fred Ott, former owner of the Wagon Wheel
Cafe, who has now retired at La Pine.
Hopefully 1981 's hottest weather is past; yet Heppner
stayed comparitively cool while Red Bluff and Redding,
Calif., were nearly 20 degrees hotter. Ashland was much
hotter than playgoers and performers cared to experience.
This week will see many Morrowites making final
preparations for the annual Fair and Rodeo which street
banners and Tom Simon ton's cartoons are so colorfully
heralding.
