Dove, pigeon, furbearer 1981-82 season set
! " i
Question: "What is your opinion of the earlier than usual
school starting date?"
"It really doesn't matter when they start school. If parents
want to take their children on vacation they will, and enroll
their children later.
"It's really not a point worth bickering about," said
LaVonne Bergs trom, The Dalles.
The Fish and Wildlife Com
mission has established 1981
82 seasons for mourning
dovis, band-tailed pigeons
and furbearers.
Dove season remains un
changed, September 1 through
30, with a daily bag limit of 10
and a possession limit of 20.
Even though doves usually
begin to migrate out of Oregon
in late August or early
September, and many hunters
would like to see an earlier
opener, September 1 is the

earliest date the season can
begin under a federal frame
work established by the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service.
Last year the season for
band-tailed pigeons was de
layed by two weeks from the
traditional opener. That was
done to give additional protec
tion to older nesting birds
which are the most productive
breeders. They are also the
most dependent on mineral
springs and vulnerable to
hunters during the first two
weeks in September.
Staff biologist Ralph Den
ney told the commission it
appears the season delay
accomplished its goal last
year and he asked for a
similar season in 1981. The
department's management
goal, he said, is to bring
band-tailed pigeon numbers
back to levels seen in the late
1960's.
Although the commission
was split almost evenly for
and against the delayed open
er, the majority voted to
continue with it for 1981. The
season will run September 12
through October 11 with a
daily bag limit of five and a
possession limit of five.
Most trapping and hunting
seasons for furbearers will be
similar to last year. One
exception involves the season
for beaver and muskrat In
Malheur County. Trapping
effort and harvest has in
creased In the county to levels
biologists do not want to see
exceeded, so the season there
was cut by two weeks for
1981-82.
More restrictive seasons
were imposed last year for
trapping river otter. This
accomplished the objective of
reducing harvest, and It was
recommended this year that
river otter season be relaxed
slightly and coincide with
beaver season, and that areas
closed for trapping beaver
also be closed for otter.
Harney County and the Snake
River also remain closed to
otter harvest.
Other furbearer seasons
remain essentially the same
as last year. Printed regula
tions for furbearers will be
available by late July. But
seasons for doves and pigeons
will be included with regula
tions for upland birds and
waterfowl, available in late
August.
Bits of information
DRINKING AND DRIVING
Some bits of miscellaneous
Information that come our
way at the Extension Office
seem meant to share. The
following shared in a staff

Society Bulletin.
Drinking and driving con
tinues to be a major problem
facing young people and
adults throughout the nation.
What do other countries do
about drunk drivers? This
information tells us that in
Australia the names of convic
ted drunk drivers are publish
ed in the local newspaper
under the heading "Drunk and
In Jail." In South Africa, the
driver is given a ten-year
prison sentence, a fine of
$10,000 or both. In Turkey, the
drunk drivers are taken 20
miles from town by police and
force to walk back under
escort.
A second conviction of
drunk driving in Bulgaria is
your last. The punishment is
execution. San Salvadore also
has a quick solution ... drunk
drivers are executed by firing
squad. Malaya Jails the rti.il'
driver and If, he Ik manic'l,
his wife also.
Finland, England, ' and
Sweden ... the punishment is
automatically Jail for approxi
mately a year.
