Recreation Report The Umatilla National For est has released the following ' weekly recreation report : The fire danger on the forest is moderate. DAl.K RANGER DISTRICT Phone: 421-3311 Hours: 7:00 - 4:30, Mon. Fri., 8:00 - 5:30, Sat. - Sun. All trails are open, but travel may be difficult due to downed trees in some areas. Lake Creek, Silver Butte, Granite Creek, North Fork John Day, and Crane Creek Trails are maintained. AH roads are open. Road 10 between Olive Lake and Fremont Powerhouse is very rough. High ground clearance vehicles only are recommend ed. Campgrounds: Camp grounds open are Tollbridge -water available, reduced ser vice; Welch Creek - no drinking water, reduced ser vice: Olive Lake - no drinking water, self-service: North Fork John Day - no drinking water, reduced service. Fishing: Fishing is fair to excellent.. There has been good luck with dry flys on Granite Creek and South Fork of Desolation. As the fire danger becomes higher, extra caution with fires and internal combustion engines is urged. During this dry weather, dust from moving vehicles can be a hazard. Care should be taken because one can tern- , purarily be blinded by the dust cloud after meeting another vehicle. Also, dust accumula tion on the windshield greatly increases the chance of blind ness when the sun shines on it at certain angles. Travelers on the back roads are urged to stop and let the dust clear after meeting another vehicle and to clean your windshield often, especially for early morning or afternoon driving. HEPPNER RANGER DISTRICT Phone: 676-9187 Hours: 7:45 - 4:30, Mon. -Fri. Trails: Copple Butte No. 3052 is open, and Bull Prairie Lake No. 3056 is open and maintained. Roads: All roads are open. County road into Penland Lake is now in good, dry condition although there are still some rough spots. Campgrounds: Bull Prairie with 20 campsites and Fair view with five campsites are open. Fishing: Fishing is poor at both Penland and Bull Prairie Lakes. Smokey Bear has been spotted again. He was seen near Bull Prairie Lake and is watching for fires to put out along his way. Fire equipment for woodcut ters is a fire extinguisher, shovel, and a saw with a screen. Dead lodge pole falling across trails continues td be a problem. Round Meadow Trail No 3155 and Big Creek Trail No 6145 still have boggy areas that pose problems to horses and trailbikes. Road 52. Ukiah-Granite Road, is dust oiled from the Forest Boundary to Mile Post 20. Campgrounds: All camp grounds are open on a limited service basis. i Fishing: Big Creek, Winom Creek, and Cable Creek con tinue to produce lots of fish. While not big in size, they are numerous and easy to catch. North Fork John Day is slow fishing for all, except the "experts." Some huckleberries and wild strawberries are showing up. This year's crop may be ' skimpy due to numerous frosty nights. Hazards: Road 53 is very rough. Drive slowly. Road 52 has heavy logging traffic during the week. There are an unusual num ber of fawns and elk calves this year and sightings are frequent. Due to the hot weather, best opportunities are the mornings and even ings. Attention Woodcutters: The fire precaution class to date is B as in Baker. The Umatilla National Forest is becoming dry - woodcutters should carry a shovel, fire extinguisher, and bucket with them at all times. For Class B days, woodcutters should stay and watch for fires one hour after saw shutoff. Campers - Starting July 27 at 8 a.m., both Jubilee Lake and Woodward Campgrounds are closed. The closure is due to road paving work. The contractor will be applying fresh oil which needs time to cure. Both campgrounds are expected to reopen by Friday, August 7, but watch for a news release or call the Walla Walla Ranger District before mak ing plans for that weekend. Woodland and Target Mea dows Campgrounds will be open and available for public use during this closure. Neith er of these campgrounds are fee campgrounds. Since litter receptacles are not provided in these campgrounds, camp ers are asked to please pack their garbage home for disposal. (il HEPPNER A.P.R., 676-9921 . 1 If August 6, 1981 BMCC scholarship group hears financial report Scholarships totalling $23,845 were awarded to students attending Blue Moun tain Community College dur ing the 1980-R1 school year, according to a report present ed to the BMCC Scholarship and Development Association at its annual meeting July 22. Included in the scholarship awards figures is $18,779 in "flow through" awards which come from businesses and civic groups. These awards are made directly to students selected by the group mem bers themselves. The remaining $5066 in scholarship monies comes from interest generated on principal held in time certifi cates. The principal is the result of money donated to the college and designated for the college scholarship fund. Scholarship recipients are selected by the college in cooperation with area high school counselors. The board reviewed the results of the president's survey mailing which had been authorized by the assoc iation at its last annual meeting. The survey identi fied the names and addresses of persons in the two-county college district interested in serving on college committees or otherwise interested in becoming involved in the college activities. The list of respondents added to the list of persons actively involved in the recent college budget election will serve as a strong nucleus of support for the college, the board was told.
