G-T Oaified A great way to find what your'e looking for
built to provide electrical
power (or the nearby towns
and old mines.
The Powerhouse was con
structed In 1908, and after 59
years of continuous service,
generated its last electrical
power In October, 1907. Due to
Its age, small size, and
remoteness, It was no longer
practical to operate the Fre
mont Powerhouse.
The source of water for the
Fremont Power Plnnt was
Olive Lake, a natural Lake at
an elevation of 5,394 feet. It Is
located approximately eight
nilles west of the Powerhouse
and can be reached by
traveling Forest Rood no. 10.
The water from Olive Lake
reached the Powerhouse
through wood and steel pipe
lines. The pipeline is approx
imately eight miles long and
drops l.OtiA feet in elevation.
Since its original construction,
it was replaced twice, the
most recent pipe measures 32
inches in diameter. The pipe
line provided water under
pressure of 425-4B5 pounds per
square Inch at the Power
house. The pipeline con still be
seen nt vurlous places along
the road between the Power
house and Olive Lake.
In 1968. California Public
Utilities Company donated the
entire complex to the Forest
Service. It is now open to the
public as a place of historical
interest.

at Pen I and Lake.
All roads on the district are
oHn, however, the road into
t'enland Lake is in poor
condition.
Copple Butte Trail No. 3052
is open, and Dull Praire Lake

maintained.

view Campgrounds are open.
Mushrooms can still be
luitnd at the higher elevations
o( the district.

available at both the district
office and at the supervisor's
office in Pendleton.
POMFROY KANGFK
DISTRICT
The fire danger is increas
ing as the days continue to be
in the higher temperatures.
Woodcutters should remem
ber to check the daily fire
pri'caulion class before cut
liii wood.
All trails, roads, and camp
grounds on the district are
open. A high amount of use
was expected for the 4th of
July holiday.
There has been an increase
of use in the WenahaTuenn
uon wilderness with visitors
taking advantage of the fish
ing, hiking, and camping
opportunities available.
Moral mushrooms can still
be found in the higher eleva
tions. A few cauliflower mush
rooms are beginning to come
out.
URIAH RANGFR DISTRICT
Trails: All trails are open
and in good condition except
for a few wet spots. Motorcyc
lists should use extra caution.
Roads: All roads are open
with a few wet spots.
Campgrounds: All camp
grounds are open on a
self-service basis.
Cauliflower mushrooms are
still in season.
WALLA WALLA RANGFK
DISTRICT
To many Umatilla Forest
visitors, woodcutting is as
much a part of the recreation
al enjoyment of the forest as ,
hiking or fishing. To provide
easy opportunity for this .
activity, a simplified system
for obtaining a free-use wood
cutting permit has been imple
mented. Woodcutting permits are
issued free to anyone interest-
ed In cutting a little fireplace
wood for their own home use.
They may be obtained from
any Umatilla Forest office. Up
to ten cords of wood may be
cut. Along with woodcutting
permits Is a special map
showing where wood may be
cut.
The Walla Walla Ranger
District has reported that
Jubilee Lake and Woodward
Campgrounds are now In full
swing. Starting June 26, fee
and garbage collections are In
effect. The nightly charge for
both campgrounds Is $2.
Campers who carry the
Golden Age or Golden Access
Passport will be entitled to a
50 percent discount on these
camping fees. To qualify for
the Golden Age Passport, an
individual must be 62 years of
age or older. The Golden
Access Passport may be
iHsured to those who are
permanently disabled or blind
and can provide written con
firmation of their eligibility.
Both the Golden Age and
Golden Access Passports may
be obtained free.
Roads on the Walla Walla
District are generally drive
able but may be soft in higher
elevation areas. Some roads
are now experiencing logging'
traffic and motorists are
advised to drive with care and
be prepared for encounters
with other vehicles.
All visitors are asked to
please follow the pack-it-out
program unci take their gar
bage home for proper dispos
al. If even a few visitors would
pick up a little that someone
else carelessly left behind, the
forest environment would
benefit tremendously.
