Irrigcn postpones
decision to hire officer

The community of Irrigon
has been without police since
last November and the min
utes read at the city council
meeting Tuesday revealed
that the city has not made a
decision on hiring a police
safety officer.
The committee stated that
after advertising for a Kufety
officer, there were only three
applicant! who had respon
ded. The committee Raid the
field of choice watt not broad
enough and should he adver
tised again. Action wan taken
to do ao, Police coverage nun
been provided by the Sheriff'
Dept. an deputies are avail
able. The city'a future relation

under way but several chan
ges would 1h necessary for the
Irrigon community to partici
pate. Since the area is
presently included in Umatil
la's prefix a different one
would need to he assigned.
The emergency number has
been in operation in the
community for several years,
based In Hermiston It is
presently operated through
the Umatilla Police Opt.
Recent corre)oitdenee from
the city of Umatilla stated that
tliev were not being adequat
ely reimbursed for the HI I
service. Umatilla indicated
that cost to tMith would total
$1. 000.
Mayor Don Epenhaeh had
met with Umatilla's mayor to
discus the matter.
Recorder Caryle Mayrand
was instructed by the council
to include the city's portion in
(lie budget being prepared,
Mayor Eppenbach gave a
report on the results of the
trial heard recently in Circuit
Court at Heppner involving
the city The case involved
quieting title for abandoned
railroad property that ran
through the city, and which
the railroad had deeded to the
city of Irrigon
A quit claim deed involving
Pennock and Laverne Chris
tiansen laid claim to portions
of the property. The findings
of the court disallowed these
claims. Council action auth
orized acquiring title insur
ance for the property.
In a related incident it was
learned that claim had been

at Blue Mountain Community
College, including three from
Heppner, have been selected
for inclusion in "Who's Who
Among Students in American
Junior Colleges."

honor.
Students are selected by
their academic achievement,
service to the community,
leadership In extracurricular
activities, and future poten
tial. The annual "Who's Who"
directory lists the names of
outstanding campus leaders
from more than 600 junior and
community colleges in the
Unites States, the District of
Columbia and several foreign
nations. The directory was
first published in 1906.
