The Ileppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, May 14, 1MI-FIVE
Around About
with Justine Weatherford
Mother's Day Is a lovely day, especially for mothers!
However, I nole that it Is also lovely for many others-such as
the pureveyors of greeting cards, candy and flowers and for
restaurants. This year it may have wiped out some of the
U.S. Postal Service deficit, I was so pleased with my cards,
gifts and letters from children and grandchildren which I .
found in my mailbox. Bell Telephone Co. did OK on Sunday,
too- I had three great long distance calls that surely made me
feel Icrs lonesome from my second and third generation who
live at such long distances from Heppner.
Now as I look at my marked over calendar for the rest of
May, I have a breathless feeling. After Garden Club on
Monday it was off to BMCC classes on Tuesday and Thursday
with several daytime meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Oh! - we all must pay the last one-third of our county taxes
by May 15. Saturday, May 16, is overflowing with activities
Including the United Methodist Church Yard Sale. ,
Then the week of May 18 through 24 includes an importapt
voting day, Tuesday, May 19, and after my two classes 4nd
an assortment of meetings, the arrival of foutf' Bill
Weatherfords and three Weavers (Karla and'family)
toward week's end when we will all spend all f Saturday,
May 23 at the Weatherford CentennialHeunion near
Arlington when descendants of W.W. Weajflerford who began
the planting of wheat in northentraf' Oregon in 1881 will
commemorate that event. f
The week's culmination in Ufis county will be the big
Morrow County Pioneer Picnj! on Sunday at the Fairgrounds
under the leadership of Jeremiah and Mary Brosnan's
descendants.
England's sage, Francis Bacon, wrote that wonder is the
seed of knowledge. Last week, Thursday, along with eleven
other folks who must wonder, too, about birds and flowers, I
am attending Steve Brownfield's "Field Experience" class.
Besides four Thursday evening classes, two in-county field
trips and a three-day trip to the Malheur National Wildlife
Refuge will bring us knowledge about birds, wild flowers,
mushrooms and other field life.
Last Saturday part of the class went with Teacher
Brownfield to the Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge
surrounding McCormack Slough, in an area principally west
of Patterson Ferry Road. We saw close to fifty different
species of birds, including an American Avocet and a
black -necked stilt feeding close together, a Dunlin, which is
rarely found here in May, and a white snow goose. We
learned a little about 12 different wildflowers. and I brought
home enough wild asparagus for my supper.
It was interesting to learn about the National Wildlife
Refuge which is visited by many scientists and hunters each
year, but where huntinR is very limited and is permitted from
established blinds only. The refuge headquarters office is at
Umatilla.
We alro visited the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife
Area on the river side of Highway 730 a short way east of
lrrigon which most of us knew nothing about before last
Saturday. Both of these protected areas are completely
within our county - assets of which we should be very proud.
Because 1 have personally gained so much from the BMCC
classes 1 have enjoyed attending the last several years, such
as. a variety of new knowledge and a number of new friends,
and because 1 know that more of our county high school
graduates have been able to continue their educations at this
nearby college, 1 am very hopeful that Morrow and Umatilla
voters will approve the institution's budget request on May
19.
So. as authorities are saying. "Those who accumulate
more knowledge have a better chance of living longer,
happier lives" remember to support our college and do
plan to enroll in more interesting and exciting classes next
fall.
