How we face cancer

Rveryone In terribly iifrnid of cancer. We oil know of
people who bnve suffered from II. hwl nursery or fxiwerful
dniKH for II, and Home who died from II. It can h a
frightening experience, one thai takes a lot of courage lo
face.
Cancer isn'l uh one (liHenne - Iherc are more than a
hundred kinds II occurs when normal cells in the body
change in some way so Ihey keep on growing and dividing al
n rapid rule, much fasler than Hie normal cells. These cells
require a large amounl of nutrients, so they roh the normal
ones and eventually squeeze them out . They can form a mass
or tumor which can keep getting bigger, However, a tumor Is
not cancer if it only enlarges, but does not spread anywhere
else. Then It is n benign tumor. It is a malignant tumor, or
cancer, If it can send small bits of Itself to different parts of
the body, such as liver, brain or lungs. It interferes with the
body's normal activity, often causes pain and weight loss,
and eventually death If not stopped.
F'eople approach cancer in three different ways. Each
approach depends on their own nature. The first approach is
to Ignore It. Some people are so afraid of cancer they don't
even want to think of It. They aren't interested in trying to
prevent It. In fact, often they do things, like smoking
cigarettes, which make it more likely. They especially don't
want lo go looking for It. They feel that "when my time
comes. It will come " They think that if they go looking for it,
they may find It. and they don't want that. These people will
probably not be helped by this article. In fact, they probably
won't even read it. because it will make them face the
thought of cancer.
I can recall a woman in her forties who was a secretary and
lived alone. She complained of some vague abdominal
discomfort and a bit of swelling in her abdomen. On
examination, she looked as if she were pregnant because her
abdomen was so large. Instead of a baby she hod a hard
tumor growing. It was obvious that she hud a tumor, yet she
waited many months before coming in to be cheeked. I guess
she thought that she would die anyway, so why come in until
it become painful. However, when the tumor was removed, it
was found benign. She didn't have cancer after all. and
was cured! All that suffering and worrying wus for naught.
Another woman wasn't so lucky. She noticed a small lump
in her breast, not much bigger than a pea. She figured it
would go away. It din'l and continued to grow. She waited
until It was the size of a baseball liefore getting it checked. By
that time it had metastasized, or spread to other parts of her
body. HocatiKe of their fear of cancer, both of these women
suffered Fear made them delay when they should have
acted.
A second group of people are petrified of cancer. They
think a lot utxiut cancer and they pay a lot of attention to how
the feel In fact, they pay Iim much attention to every
symptom. Iteeause they think that every symptom may be
due to cancer. Thee tenple have cancer phnbia The fear of
cancer so dominates their lives that they can't In- happy,
relax and enjoy life. ,
A middle lined man came in complaining of abdominal
discomfort and wondered if be had cancer. In fact, he was
sure he must have cancer somewhere. He had a little cough
for a few day, so wanted a chest X-niv to check for that He
also noticed mime headache, so thought he might have brain
earn er. It turned out that he had just seen another doctor for
his abdominal cotnplainls who had examined him and done a
complete et of tests and x-rays and found nothing wrong.
This man was so afraid of cancer that nothing could convince
him he didn't have it He was unable lo live a normal life. He
needed lii pay less allenlion to his laxly and more attention to
the world around him
A third group of people are also afraid of cancer, but they
have a more positive outlook than the first two groups. They
know that cancer can tie treated, and often can lie cured -esperially
if caught early They want to prevent cancer, if
possible, so they don't smoke And if they do have symptoms
suggestive of cancer, the especially want to find out as soon
as possible so they can have the liesl chance of getting rid of
it. They take charge of their lives and ImkIIcs,
These people have a much healtier mental outlook They
realize, of course, thai no one lives forever Hut they also
understand thai they can do a great deal lo insure a longer,
healthier life. Hy being aware of the warning signs of cancer
and not ignoring them when present, and by Inn ing periodic
medical checkups, they significantly lower the risk of dying
of cancer.
For those who don't remember the seven warning signals
of cancer, they are: I ) change in bowel or bladder habits: 2)
a gore that does not heal: 3 unusual bleeding or discharge:
4) thickening or lump in breast or elsewhere; 5) indigestion
or difficulty in swallowing; 6) obvious change in wart or
mole; and 7) nagging cough or hoarseness.
