Heppner Fillies faced the
Wasco Redsides and suffered
a devasting loss, 36-47.

The lone Cardinals finished
their league season Saturday
with a victory at Cascade
I,ocks, 64-60. They finished
their regular season with nine
victories in a row.
The game at Cascade Locks
was a hard-fought battle all
the way with the teams
deadlocked at 13 after the first
quarter. By half time the
Cards managed to take a
six-point lead, 31-25.
Third quarter action again
saw both teams playing
evenly as the Cards managed
to outscore the Pirates, 15 to
14, for a seven-point bulge at

46-39.
Fourth quarter action
caught the Pirates storming
back into the game as they
outscored the Cardinals, 18-21.
but the Cards held on for the
victory, 64-60.
High scorer for the Card
inals was Treve Peterson with
13. Mark Patton, Les Thomp

contirbuted 10 points to the
cause. Leading rebounder for
the Cards was La Rue with 8.
Cascade Locks' scoring was
led by Larry Sears and Victor
Bilyeu with 16 points. Toney
Melton had 10.

Card varsity takes
Umapine victory

The Cardinal varsity boys
traveled to Umapine on Fri
day, and were victorious,
68-46. over the Chiefs.
The Cards took an early lead
in the first quarter, 21-8, and
substituted freely as they took
a 32-18 lead into the half.
The Cards came out at the
half to outscore the Chiefs,
18-13, in the third quarter, to
make the score 50-31.
In the last quarter Tim
Patton scored eight of the
Cards 18 points as they took a
68-46 victory.
Mark Patton had 15 points
and 14 rebounds to lead the
Cards.
The Cards out-rebounded
the Chiefs, 46-36. The Chiefs
had 35 turnovers to the
Cardinals' 22.
The Cards shot 32 of 89 for 36
percent from the field and four
of 10 for 40 percent from the
line. The Chiefs shot 19 of 63

The Heppner High School
Rodeo Club is currently sell
ing raffle tickets for '4 beef.
Tickets are $1.00 each, or 6 for
$5.00.
The money accumulated
from the raffle will go towards
funding trips to different
rodeos around the stale.
The Drawing is scheduled
for March 28.

HHS boys JVs defeat Condon
A tenacious zone press
enabled the Heppner boys
junior varsity basketball team
to outscore Condon, 25-6, in the
third quarter and coast to an
80-56 win Tuesday, Feb. 17, in
Heppner.
The game was the season
finale for the Mustang JVs,
who ended their season with a
7-7 record.
Midway through the second
quarter and the score tied
15-15, Heppner went into its
full-court press and led by as
many as 18 points before going
in at halftime ahead, 39-25.
The Mustangs kept the press
on and when the starters
exited with two minutes to go
in the third quarter, they were
ahead by 32 points.
Marty Britt led Heppner in
scoring with 19 points, follow
ed by Jeff Orr with 18, Jay

The Cardinal Junior Varsity
finished their season Saturday
with a loss to Cascade Locks
at Cascade Locks. The team
finished the season with a 13
and 5 record.
The Cards jumped to an
early lead. 14-13, at the end of
the first quarter. In the second
quarter the Cards outscored
the Pirates, 12 to 9, to lead at
the half break. 26-22. The
Cards were then outscored
16-13 in the third period, but
still held a slim 39-38 lead.

Orr led Coach Brent Eggers'
rating system with a 28
rating, tying his best of the
year. Heppner had a team
rating of 52, also highest of
the season.
Orr hit 9 of 13 shots from the
field, grabbed 12 rebounds,
dealt out eight assists, and had
five steals. Connor had six
rebounds and four steals, and
Struthers came ofTthe bench
to collect six rebounds.

"It was a really enjoyable
game to watch," said Eggen.
"We got off to a slow start , but
we had a lot of fun the second
half. The press really destroy
ed them and broke the game
open."
Orr led the JVs in moat
individual statistics for the
season. He had the highest
overall rating with a 184
mark, and led in scoring
average (14.8), rebounds
(145). steals (61) and tied with
Harry Groshens for the lead in
assists with 39 apiece. He also
had more turnovers (67) and
fouls (53) than anyone else on
the team.
Other players with positive
overall ratings were Greg
Connor (59), Groshens
(41), Jay Hayes (29). and
Marty Britt ( 22).

U of O signs Lerry Wilson

Rich Brooke, head football
coach for the University of
Oregon, Eugene, was in Irri
gon, Monday at 9:45 a.m. to
sign Lerry Wilson for an
all-expense paid scholarship
to the University.
I'rry visited the university
recently and liked what he
saw. although he ran into a
little problem getting there.

One aspect that hurt Hep
pner this season was fouls.
The Mustangs committed 297
fouls. 86 more than its
opponents, and had more fouls
in 12 of 14 games. Heppner
made 41 more field goals
(298 257). but made just 115 of
234 free throws while the
opponents were IfU for 359.
Heppner defeated every
team it played this season
except Pilot Rook, who beat
the MuNtangs. 42-34 and 46-40.

His plane was unable to land
in Eugene because of a cloud
cover, so he was taken lo
North Bend on the coast. He
managed to get to Eugene
with the help of several
coaches.
Because Irry wanted to
stay in Oregon and play in a
Pac-10 college, he gave up an
offer to go to the Air Force
Academy.
